can it cause any damage or affect the performance in any way? Is this something I can get by without fixing?

If it's AFTER the catalytic converter, it probably won't do any serious damage.

When exhaust gas leak under your car there a definite possibility that the dangerous gas can get into the cab (passenger section). So it is only prudent get exhaust leaks fixed.

besides loss of power and gas mileage due to low back pressure, i had a muscle car w shorty pipes and the fumes would fill my car, still effects my memory to this day. have it welded or go to a junkyard and replace the part.

no matter where is the leak it wont damage your car so go and sleep well

smoke can kill you so fix it for you not for the car

you can until it rusts into two pieces then it will drag the road and can cause all kinds damage . but as far as the motor is concerned your fine.

Yes, it can, and perhaps almost as important the fumes can kill you.
