we bought an old mercedes 308 off ebay for our new business.we were told that there might be a small problem with the starting motor.today ,however just after we had got all our deliveries on board my husband went to start it up and there was nothing at all . Worse still we can`t even get the stock back out of the van as all the electrics have gone off and the tail lift won`t work! whats happened??
by the way the diesel guage was still working but whenever my husband switched the interior light switch on for the back of the van (which is in the cab) the guage went off!!??

If you put the key in the ignition and turn the key but nothing happens, the most likely cause is a dead battery. Since none of the electronics work, there's a good chance your battery is dead. Here's an easy test: Have someone hook their jumper cables up to your battery while their car is running and try it. If the gauges don't start working right away and you can't get your engine to turn over after 5 minutes, you have some sort of electrical problem that a mechanic will have to hunt down and fix. DO NOT take it to a dealership -- they'll charge you top-dollar and usually do crappy work. Find a local mom-and-pop mechanic with a good reputation and ask him/her if he/she will take a look at it (some mechanics won't work on German vehicles). Good luck!

In retrospect buying a car on eBay was not the most prudent thing to do. When you buy used its better to hire a mechanic to review the car first. You could be stuck here. If there were things not disclosed I suggest filing a complaint with eBay
