I owned a 1984 MR2. The answer to your question is it will start but ONLY if it is in neutral. Otherwise, the clutch has to be engaged to start it in gear.
As a side note, you should know that Toyota had lots of problems with the fifth gear going out on that particular year's model. I had to replace my 5th gear twice - and it gave out a third time - all within 2 years! Buyer Beware.

I would queston my self if I really want this car ? Yes you can start it with no clutch that generally is not a problem . I would be more corncered in the general over all condition of the vehicle . With out a working clutch you cannot road test the vehicle . The Transmission and drive line could have problems as well . Unfortuantly their would be know way to tell until you replaced the clutch .Their are many things that can and do go wrong with manual tranmissions . There may be a gear out , here is a example - you repalce the clutch and then road test the car . Let,s say your car is a 5-speed manual . You shift thru the gears and when you get up to thrid gear you shift realise the clutch and you nothing happanes , you feel like you are in netural . I bought a 1970 G.M.C. P.U. once that supposedly only needed a clutch and I was sure sorry I bought it . I put the clutch in only to discover the linkage was bad . I repaired the linkage . I then road tested the truck only to find out I did not have a thrid gear. I opened up the transmission and much to my dismay the gears where junk . I literly scoured wrecking yard,s for a used Transmission . I found one that was labled a "working Transmission " worng this one too had problems with the gears . I finally took both Transmissions to a Tranmisson shop and had one of them repaired . I could go on with other problems this truck had that I would have found out if it was in driveable condition . To make a long story short In my opion if this car is Not a classic any car that does not run / drive do not buy it . It is a headache that I just do not need. I hope this helps .

Your going to buy an MR2? If it starts with no clutch then the clutch safety witch has been jumped together.Or the clutch cable or slave is bad.If you can depress the clutch while engine is running, and put it into gear, with out the car jumping forward. If that part is OK,then the safety switch on the clutch pedal is bad.

Even if there are problems with the clutch the car should still start. You might have problems shifting but starting the car is controlled by a switch that is activated when the pedal is pressed. If the Clutch itself is bad you wont have a problem starting the car as long as the switch works but you will want to start it in neutral in case it starts slipping.

The clutch has nothing to do with the car starting. There is a starter interlock on the clutch pedal the prevents the starter from working on most cars.
See the web site below to see how clutches work.

As long as the car is in neutral you should be able to start it. Newer cars require the cluch pedal to be depressed to start the car. Even if the car you want to buy requires this, the condition of the clutch should not affect starting the car.

as long as you can push the clutch pedal to disengage the safety switch yes it will start if he says it won't then pass it by as long as it is just a clutch it should start if the pedal is messed up disconnect the switch at the pedal and bypass it with it not starting this could be the problem

As long as you don't have to push start it , why would you want to buy a car without a clutch ?

It can start without a clutch however u need to fix it right away, its a bit complicated to start it: you need to have it on the firts gear turn the key and inmediately accelerate(like medium strengh) as soon as it asks you to change gear change it to 2nd gear and so on...
