We took our 2004 Geo Prisim to a shop and told them the AC was not working nor was the fan; They charged us $270.00 to fix it (saying the fan only was broken, not the AC)
the AC worked twice and stopped; We took it back and the ownwer said the compressor was no good and it would cost $500.00. I think they should have fixed it right the first time or at least put the $270.00 towards a compressor. Am I right or wrong?

BTW We did not get it fixed and they charged another $30.00 just for looking at it.

That was way too much for the AC work. At the most you can go to the dealer and get a brand new compressor for no more than $300. The problem is when the compressor goes out, or you loose pressure the fan doesn't kick on. SO all they did was try to replace parts until the found what they thought was the fix to the problem. I would go the the BBB better business buerau. They should have gave you credit for the first 270 you spent. Good luck with the problem.

Sometimes it is necessary to fix one part of a system in order to determine if other parts are working properly.

The fan malfunction would have been fairly obvious, so they fixed that. In testing their repair, it is possible that the compressor worked for a few minutes and that was enough to satisfy them that it was working. It would be unrealistic to expect them to do a more rigorous test on the AC unless you advised them that it cut out after 1/2 hour or some such info.

It very well could have happened the way they said it did.

And $500 is about the going rate for the compressor and the install.

Parts and labor to replace a fan?
That's about right.

If it worked when you left, you're stuck with it unless you can prove they did something to make it break, or the fan went out again.

I work in the AC business and my customers have made me a good serviceman. They demand excellence from me and I think you should to the same with the people you have been dealing with.

The A/C worked twice and then stopped.... hmmmmm.... read what you wrote. If the "fan" was out it could have caused another problem shortly after ????
