Apologies if you've already read this, but i put it in the wrong/different category!

I've recently bought a peugeot 406 TD. It's done 145k, runs perfect, engine sweet as a nut. On start up a puff of smoke (perhaps a little more than you'd expect), but standing, blows fresh air out; even standing while revving up, blows fresh air. Trouble is, when it's in low revs when moving; on or shortly after a gear change, it belches out black smoke. when i accelerate generally, more so when turbo kicking in, lots of black smoke.

i have changed the air, oil and fuel filters, changed oil twice, flushed the oil on the first oil change, added an injector cleaning additive into fuel tank, and still got the problem.

anybody that has had exactly the same problem, or a mechanic/TD specialist, really need your help guys!!

Cheers, Chris.

I had noticed "jumping" in my car and when I took it in they serviced the transmission (whatever that entails) and that helped temporarily. So next time I took it in I asked them about it, and now they are saying they do hear something in the transmission and the engine. And they are quoting around 3k to get it all looked at and fixed. Very trustworthy mechanics, known forever (so I won't take it somewhere else!). So I've just gone about my business hoping it doesn't just stop on me. Yesterday it started to obviously jerk/vibrate several times - Once when i was stopped at a stop light, going up a somewhat steep hill and trying to speed up, and then soon after the vehicle was started and was just idling. So is this the transmission? Any suggestions what I can do myself, i.e. add transmisison oil, etc.

i posted this question earlier but was not specific enough... when i start the car when it is cold i get a whirring noise from a plastic casing to the right of the engine, it lasts for approx 1 minute then stops. it sounds like a fan but i have no idea what it actually is. i am sure it is meant to do what it is doing but i would love to know what it is for. i have a friend who has exactly the same car but when he starts his vectra his box does not make a noise at all and he is now worried that something is wrong with his car.. please diagnose this for us you lovely people

I switched years ago to full synthetic oil in my 1996 Cougar. Partly because I knew already that it was a better oil to use but also because my mom drove my dad's new truck for hours in a snow storm with the oil light on. The only thing that saved his truck engine was the synthetic oil he used. However, it is out of my budget to maintain the full synthetic and I'm over due for an oil change. So, will it hurt to switch to the blend?

My daugther has an 89 camero that makes a whirling sound in the back end when u drive it. We just bought it and I found some old paper work in the glove box and it says spider gears in rear differential are worn and making noise, need to replace gears and all bearings. Is this going to be expensive to do and is the car still ok to drive?

someone told me it is rare for the evap/charcoal canister to go bad, and is an expansive fix. What are some less expensive things 2 rule out the possibility of a bad evap canister?

yes i have a 2002 pontiac firehawk and my check engine light came on. It sputters alot and i cant get a full punch out of my vehicle. I took it to autozone, and they said that it was code #1133 which was also called "air fuel mixture valve." They did mention that was a dealer part so i called the dealer and i was told that they have no idea what im talking about. If anyone knows what that code could mean that would be great. Mods on car are long tube headers, custom tune, underdrive pulleys, TNT nitrous system "100shot", borla catylitc converter.

This usually happens when stopped at a light or something. Starting hasn't been a problem. It automatically slips into 3rd when stopped for a period of time. What could it be? I have just moved to a new area and haven't found a good mechanic yet. Don't want to get ripped off. I would like to have some ideas before I see anyone.

Replaced 305 with 350. Rebuilt throttle body. During normal driving speed, car shimmy, shakes and rattles. At higher rpms, seems to smooth out some. Idles fine. Cranks fine. I feel like it may be a possible vacuum leak. Any suggestions please?

I took my car through one of the car washes where your wheels are sitting in a track and it lightly scratched my polished aluminum wheels - but all the way around. Can I just buff it out or will that further ruin the surface? I bought some buffing compound. Will that do it?
