I had noticed "jumping" in my car and when I took it in they serviced the transmission (whatever that entails) and that helped temporarily. So next time I took it in I asked them about it, and now they are saying they do hear something in the transmission and the engine. And they are quoting around 3k to get it all looked at and fixed. Very trustworthy mechanics, known forever (so I won't take it somewhere else!). So I've just gone about my business hoping it doesn't just stop on me. Yesterday it started to obviously jerk/vibrate several times - Once when i was stopped at a stop light, going up a somewhat steep hill and trying to speed up, and then soon after the vehicle was started and was just idling. So is this the transmission? Any suggestions what I can do myself, i.e. add transmisison oil, etc.

This car is now 11 yrs old and its my expirence that the axod tranny in your car and the tarus werent real good to start with so youve done better than most if a new car is beyond your means then a rebuild is in the cards I just hope the cases themselves are in good shape or allthe new parts in the world wont fix .

You need to quit trusting those really trustworthy mechanics. A whole rebuilt transmission should only run 1200 to 1500. And quoting you 3k in repair costs because they "hear" something is an extremely obvious attempt to rip you off for all you can bear.

Hi Alison, I think, from what you say, that it could well be the transmission. Although I believe that $3000 is a bit steep. I know that you feel obliged to stay with your mechanic I would ask a transmission shop for an estimate and to take it for a ride to trouble shoot it.They can't trouble shoot it from a desk.If your mechanic is a bonifide transmission shop then I guess they are ok..Most mechanics do not have the expertise to trouble shoot a transmission..

pretty common problem on the taurus/sables.

Bet it has around 130,000 miles on it.

3000 repair sounds real high
