could be the timing chain/belt has gotten a little off. This happened with my car before. The car would act like it was going to cut off when I slowed down/stopped unless I tapped the gas or put it in neutral. When I took it to the shop, he said the timing belt needed to be replaced. Also, there is something about a car's idling speed that sometimes needs to be adjusted.

Plus when does it happen after a drive on the highway or just around town?????.Auto or manual trans????

sounds like your carborator or your idle needs adjusting..
