Maintenance & Repairs - November 2006

My beloved Alfa, which is in immaculate condition, needs a new engine. Can anyone help? I've seen very similar cars for sale @ £2500. Thing is, the car's been off the road for 4 months, & I had to phone the guy at the garage where the car was towed to obtain the mileage to declare it off the road, [Sorn Certificate]. Now, here's the classic, he was supposed to be sourcing a new engine during this time, now he's saying "Don't scrap the car, I'll take it off you for £50, as I might be able to to put an Engine in it". I suspect he's found an engine, and he's been waiting for me to come back to him about this. What do you think I should do????

i have a 98 Contour and some days while i'm driving it seems like its skipping in and out of gear and then when its out of gear its straining but then engine is till spinning and goin up and then it suddenly jumps back into gear it w/ a loud knock and everthing is normal driving. i believe its stall in and out of gear. it seems like the only time it does it is when the car has run for a while. i know it has to do something w/ my transmission but i'm not sure what part of it.

I installed new fel-pro Intake gaskets on a 1996 pontiac grand am 3.1 litre motor and torqued everything back to specs. Found out this wasnt the problem it is the head gaskets leaking. My question is if I pull this motor down again to install Head gaskets can I safely re-use the intake gaskets that I just bought and installed. set costs around 100 dollors. Thanks any experience will be helpful to me.

the alternator light stays on and the power steering does not work the battery is almost flat would this affect the power steering

my car sounds like an old bus when I brake at red lights. Also, if I drive around town a lot (as opposed to highways) using my brakes, there is a buring smell coming out of my hood. Any answer? thank you

I drive a 1998 subaru legacy gt with 140,000 miles on it. I just bought it about a month ago. Just today it started shaking at speeds over 40mph. It's really bad at 70. The steering has been weird since I boght it. It pulls to the right (and sometimes to the left while breaking). Now, it kind of pulls itself wherever it feels like. We got a lot of snow today, and the ABS kicked in before I noticed a problem. (don't know if that has anything to do with it or not). I'm a broke college student with no mechanical ability. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think my battery might be diying. I don't want to pay $90 for the nissan dealer to tell me its not my alternator and just a battery. What symptoms of a dead battery appear? Or can it just die overnight?

We took the head off...tested it for warping (negative) and replaced the gaskets. Prior to replacing the gaskets, there was a LOT of white smoke coming out the muffler along with antifreeze. Now...we replaced the head gasket and there is still a LOT of white smoke coming out of the tailpipe. Is this because of all the water that was in there from before the repair...or is something else wrong?

i have a 1993 mercury cougar and the automatic seatbelts are not working. is there a fuse or something i could replace to get them working again. the seatbelt motor doesnt even run. if not a fuse, how can i fix it?

i have a honda 6.5 hp gx 200 engine i have
-bypassed the muffler partially to give it a little better airflow and it still has enough back preassure,
-increased the spring tension on the throttle as much as i can

i know i can change the gear ratios, but i would like to increase the top spead and i guess the max rpms ( right now it is 3900 by default) i don't want to take the governor off, but i have been told by a guy that knows what he is talking about that most govorners are ajustable so im not positive whether or not thats right but i just wanted to thow taht into the open.
it doesn't go fast enough 4 me and i want to know how to tweak the engine because i know there is way more power left in the engine than what it is giving me... and not spend any money on new parts... need very detailed answers... (not very experienced with the engine)

I recently purchased
SONAR SK3302-CV92 SAE HRAPP2I3 H1VOL.
I bought these headlights for a 1994 Civic. They are black halo projector headlights and I was looking to put HID bulbs in them. I'm not sure if these will work with HID. I've heard different things, some say they will others say they won't. Any help would nice. Thanks.

My headlight on my T reg clio has blown 4 times in a fortnight. The glass bulb completely shatters. Is it possible to get power surges to just one side of the car? I do drive on back roads a lot and flick from dipped to main beam a fair bit, could that be part of the problem. Just want to get clued up before going to see an auto electrician.
