Depending on the model of car you may even have to remove the oil pan, Hopefully not though, whatever you do take your time, that's a job that will frustrate you very easily and you don't want to break the cover and pay big $$ for it. Refer to repair book if possible, even if you just go to Autozone and look at it and don't buy. Chilton books are pretty good.

It would help to know what type of motor you are working on. Some motors have two bolts on the bottom of the engine, one on each side of the crank shaft. If you are sure that you have all of the bolts out, just use a screwdriver or chisel tap with a hammer around the edges and pry up until it pops loose.

You might have to remove the crank pulley, and I am assuming you removed the water pump pulley, and all the belts? The gasket can hold it good, so use a small screw driver to pry it off, but make sure the crank pulley isn't part of the problem first.

you can try to wedge a flat head screwdriver between them or lightly tap with a brass hammer.. more than likely if you got all the bolts its the gasket. just be very careful not to dent or crack the cover

get a rubber mallet, and tap on it gently, if it's just a stubborn gasket or whatever, then it should come loose with 3-4 taps
