Do your lights come on when you turn them on? If not, then there is something wrong with the connection of your battery. If the lights do come on, then you may have a starter problem. What happens when you turn the key on? Need a little more info :-)

Pontiac's Tempest 2.2 2.3 and 3.1 V6
All have grounding electrical system... 1st if it died and you put a new battery in it and its still dead CHECK the new Battery 1st.. Is it installed backwards?
If its OK... you have a list to check out
1st Ign Main Fuse and ACC. fuse
2nd Ground wire off your battery connections at both ends
3rd Positive cable connections at both ends
4th postive wire on the back of your Alternator that connects to your fuse box and battery...
5th By this time you should have at least radio or dome light but if you still can't start the engine (turn it over) Check the starter wires and silinoid then the starter...
This should get you started. Also you might want to get a repair manual that has your car and engine style in it...

Disconnect battery, check main power connection nut on solenoid. If it's tight, you have probably blown a fusible link(a piece of wire from the main solenoid connection to one or more of the large RED wires going into the main harness. These are easily obtained from your local G.M. dealer,,;-)=

Battery cables not connected. (I have seen the cables put on new batteries without removing the plastic protectors off the posts.)
Main fuse blows. (Under hood, driver's side)
Ground or hot lead is connected to the battery fine, but the other end has broken.

could be a break in one of your battery cables, or could be that the starter solenoid is bad, try tapping it lightly with a pocketknife or something. don't hit the posts on the solenoid, just the plastic area. you can trace the positive cable to the solenoid usually, usually on the firewall a few inches away from the battery

check the battery terminals for sign of corrosions and second the main fuses(maxi-fuses) before you do anything else.
