My beloved Alfa, which is in immaculate condition, needs a new engine. Can anyone help? I've seen very similar cars for sale @ £2500. Thing is, the car's been off the road for 4 months, & I had to phone the guy at the garage where the car was towed to obtain the mileage to declare it off the road, [Sorn Certificate]. Now, here's the classic, he was supposed to be sourcing a new engine during this time, now he's saying "Don't scrap the car, I'll take it off you for £50, as I might be able to to put an Engine in it". I suspect he's found an engine, and he's been waiting for me to come back to him about this. What do you think I should do????

I would get rid of this car as fast as you can .
Yes they are well known for unreliability and massive engine
failures.
If you change the engine ,you will only get more problems .
sell this thing as it stands,
Cut your losses .

the Alfa 145 isn't difficult to source an engine for so I would put money on the garage trying to pull the wool over your eyes so-as-to-speak. You'll get an engine easily for about £300 and for a car like that it's worth it. Alfa's aren't like Escorts etc. They're an example of what a car should be (only without the mechanical niggles!) and I think that any car you bought to replace it would be a sad disappointment. I'd get a new engine yourself if I were you and find a more trustworthy garage to fit it. If you spend a morning sat at your computer you'll almost certainly have a choice of engines to buy for your car. Then all you have to do is get it fitted.

Sounds a bit shifty to me

If he might be able to put an engine in it for him why can't he put one in for you

There are plenty of good "salvage" dealers that would have a late low mileage engine for that car. Whilst it is not a Mondeo there is still quite a few about and sometimes they get written off through damage so an engine must be available secondhand
Search the net for car salvage

I would take the car away and get a new engine in it, but next time be more careful in maintaining it. I have heard that these Alfa engines are notorious for going bang even when maintained.
