When it rains, my brakes squeal and the car stops really suddenly when I hit the brakes (kind of herky-jerky). This goes away after a few minutes.

And when I ease into a parking spot or my garage, there is a slight grinding sound/feel coming from my front brakes. This only happens when I'm slowly applying the brakes.

Are these signs that my car needs new brakes?

When i turn the key there is no noise at all. On my display an explanation mark indicator glows red as does the little oil can and the battery. But nothing else happens. At first I just thought it was a dead battery but the car light still turns on when i get in and the headlights still do work. I have checked the fuses and they seem fine. Any one got any suggestions?

Has been running with a rough low idle for a few weeks since getting colder weather. Has some strong rains over the weekend. Next day when trying to start, it would turn over, but not start.

Started with fuel filter because of the idle situation. Was very clogged, so replaced. nothing.

I pulled a plug and made sure it was getting a spark. Also added more gas to the tank to in case bad gas.

What's next?

I'm thinking of buying an 89 Toyota Camry, but I was told that the car is a little 'loud' due to the exhaust pipe, and may need to be replaced. They told me it would probably cost $80-$100 for a replacement. Is this accurate? Sorry, if there's not enough info, but this is all I know about it for now.

My car battery died last night, the car and battery are three years old. This was the battery that was in it when I bought it. It seems to have died due to excessive corrosion on the terminals. My question is, when I have the car serviced for regular oil changes, etc. should the dealer's service center been checking that and removing the corrosion or is that something you need to pay extra for? Right now I'm pretty peeved, but not sure if I should be peeved at myself or at the dealer.

I have a good amount of on-hands, basic "driveway" mechanic experience, and have been selling parts for about 6 years now, but have never attempted a carb rebuild. I have the kit and all the parts, and don't want to mess it up. This is an original equipment carb from a 1967 Corvair, and I would like to avoid buying one if possible. Any suggestions on where to find on-line instructions would be welcome also, as I do not really want to invest in a manual, since I will most likely never have to do this again.

I have a 2001 Saturn SL2. I need to have my radiator hoses and serpentine belt changed. The dealership quoted me $360, and my mom's usual car shop (she also has a Saturn) quoted me $240. Where should I go??? Should it be a concern that the car shop doesn't specialize in Saturns specifically?

I have seen people bring a vehicle into the shop that was beyond repair, totally worn out, and shouldn't even be on the road, but yet the customer thought you were a rip off for not making it run like new! Some people even think certified mechanics are cocky, and don't have a clue about working on a car. I would just like to know what it takes to be a mechanic that would please everybody that comes into the shop? If you are unable to repair your vehicle yourself, and you don't have a geniuss in the family, then who do you turn to? Why can't people realize it takes years and a world of back breaking, nasty, hard labor, to be a certified mechanic, and to never get any respect for all the cars they do fix. Just the ones that want to be mechanics try to fix, and end up at a real mechanics shop. All mechanics are not rip off's!! A certified mechanic must pass a state exam, and do it every so often to keep his certification. Is this a rip off?

I have improperly jumped my '93 Olds Cutlass Ciera. At first only the aftermarket radio was not working. After changing the fuses in the radio's wire harness more things stopped working. The list of things that aren't working is as follows: dome light, power lock buttons radio, and sometimes cruise control. Today I plugged the original radio into the car with mixed results. It would play a white noise sound through the speakers and the volume knob would control the volume. The sound that the speakers were making was a whining and a series of beeps. How would I go about figuring out what is wrong with my car and how much would it cost to get it looked at and or fixed.

I have power to my ignition, but my starter wont even click. I think it may be stuck. I would give it a little tap if I knew where it was.

Im a non certified mechanic, Been in this business for 25-30 yrs, My father was a certified mechanic for GM. I just don't understand why certi's get so cocky when I fix their screw up and the customer calls them out on it. Had one last year that got really upset when the customer took his shop to court and sued him for an improper transmission insallation. He was pretty upset with me also. I just dont understand the shadyness.. Just say "I screwed up Im sorry but I will make it right" Well before it was done He had to refund all of her money and compensate her for the time she had wasted broke down and my labor for redoing the job.
All I did was remove the trans, replace the bell housing and torque converter and put it Back. There were 2 bolts in the torque converter that were cross threaded and the bell housing was broken because they had only put 2 trans bolts in it.
They kept saying there is no warranty because it was a used trans.
Im sorry but you have to do good work.

My boyfriend recently bought a low-mileage 2004 Jetta TDI sedan. Love the car, love the mileage (diesels rule!), but the trunk is a pain. It takes 2 hands to open & close it with the strength of Arnold Schwartzeneger - he is not generally handy, and since I often have 1 hand full of grocery bags when I am needing to close it - I need suggestions on how to fix this, please!
