When i turn the key there is no noise at all. On my display an explanation mark indicator glows red as does the little oil can and the battery. But nothing else happens. At first I just thought it was a dead battery but the car light still turns on when i get in and the headlights still do work. I have checked the fuses and they seem fine. Any one got any suggestions?

Checkist.

Do the lignts dim when the switch is turned from run to start, if they do it is the Battery or connections, or a Jammed starter.
If the lights stay bright, does it click when you turn from run to start, if it clicks, it is the starter, if not is it an Automatic, if it is a Manual you have starter switch or solenoid fault, if an auto hold the starter switch over to start and wiggle the gearlever, if it starts it is the inhibitor switch on the gearbox if not it could be either starter switch, solenoid or inhibitor switch, you have checked the fuses, but there may be an additional starter relay which could be the culprit instead of the solenoid..
I have known the starter switch fail and wiring connectors fail on older cars so before spending money just run a 10 amp lead from battery to starter solenoid connection, (put it in neutral first) and just check that it does not work, if it does it is not starter or solenoid so check ignition switch wiring and relay.
Just a process of elimination, which is why mechanics are worth paying £25 to find and fix the fault in 5 minutes.

I've had this a couple of times. It sounds like one of two things both connected with your starter motor. Here's what to do:

1. Leave the thing in gear and push the car with the handbrake off. You need to rock it back and forth. Basically the mechanics in the starter motor has jammed. If its not that....

2. You'll need to get into the engine bay and locate the starter motor. Find some pics on the net to help. it'll be the thing about the size of a supersize coke can. Find the lead/s that connect to it. Pull them off and re-fit to make sure they're connected properly.

Other than that it could be a your alarm or immobiliser is breaking the circuit. In that case get a garage to take a look.

examine the voltage of the battery. it relatively is going to study above 12, and frequently around 13. If no longer, examine the alternator and connections. If the battery is powerful then you definately've a connection problem with the wiring. this would reason inadequate power going to the starter. The starter kicks out a shaft that spins the flywheel. in case you hear noise the starter would desire to be misaligned and the shaft isn't lining up with the flywheel. i don't comprehend sufficient approximately starters yet i assume it relatively is a possibility that the starter isn't throwing out the shaft in spite of the undeniable fact that that's spinning.

Sounds like you need a new starter motor, sorry. Years ago, if the starter motor was giving trouble, you could rock the car and start it that way. Don't know if it will work on today's cars. To save you some cash I think you may be able to buy a reconditioned one. Good luck (just the time of year you could do without the expense).

My Car Has Broken Down

If there is no noise at all, the problem is most likely in your starter solenoid. If there is a click, but nothing happens, the problem is the starter itself. These two items are generally sold as a unit, and most any auto parts store could test them for you once you get them off the car. Good luck!

My car broke down once too. I called my father, and he told me it was the battery. The lights on my car worked and it even made a little noise. The problem arrose from me have to jump my car a lot from leaving the lights on. I didn't think it was the battery eaither. the new batter was the answer. I think ou should get one.

It could still be the battery, you need to turn off absolutely EVERYTHING electrical, the radio, the fans, the lights, let it rest, then try, If it still won't start get a friend and some jump leads

If you don't hear a click at all it could be your starter solenoid,or the battery. Batteries tend to go out when the weather changes. do your lights work? If they do work have someone stand in front of the car when you try to start it, if your lights almost go out then your battery definitely needs charged, and you might not even have enough juice to have the solenoid engage.

It could be that there is no juice getting to the starter motor, the starter motor is jambed or still engaged. Absolutely no noise could mean nothing is being fed to the starter motor at all. If that doesn't solve it call the breakdown truck
