Maintenance & Repairs - November 2006

Our car has been leaking antifreeze for awhile now. We topped it up last week but it still leaked. My bf just started up the car and drove for a minute and the engine blew or something. He said theres steam coming out from the engine, fumes inside the car :S, and antifreeze all over the ground. He said he was going to try to start it back up on the phone to drive back to his work (1 min away..) I think that's a bad idea. What could the problem possibly be and how much is it going to cost us? I don't even know if it's worth it on a '95 Pontiac Grand AM.

Hello-

I have a 2002 Mustang GT w/ 50,000 miles on it--About a week ago the "service engine soon" light came on and I took it into the dealship and they said that the oil from my K&N filter had leaked onto my mass air sensor and killed it so I would need to replace the sensor as well as buy a new filter if I didnt want it to happen again. They wanted to charge me an arm and a leg to do it so instead I went and bought the parts and had a mechanic friend of mine do it for much cheaper. The only problem is after the new parts have been installed the car is still running horibbly (idleing and running really rough and swaying back and forth like a boat on water when its idleing. This is the same thing it was doing before the parts were replaced.) So now Im wondering what could be wrong with it. I replaced the parts they said to replace and the car is still running horrible. My mechanic friend is not sure of the cause, anyone have any ideas what could still be wrong?

Thanks so much.

I'm thinking of buying a used car. When it is stopped at a red light, the idle revs up. If I shift into neutral, the idle stops revving. Does this mean there's a serious problem? I can't afford to put any real money into the car at this time. Thanks.

My antifreeze is full and there is no spraying or leaking that I can see but when my car is idling the temp gauge overheats. What could it be?

I have the 6cyl engine. The car will run and have good heat then go cold and overheat. We replaced the thermostat and radiator cap. The cooling system has lots of pressure. It seems as though it just gets overpressured and comes out. Could it possibly be the waterpump? Head gasket....but fluid all looks good? An obstruction maybe? Just need Burperd/Bled? Any other ideas or suggestions?

The brake lights stay on all the time in my car. I think it has something to do with the brake pedal. It is as if whatever the pedal pushes is a few millimetres away from where it should be and the brake pedal sits about 2 mm lower than where it should as I can lift it up with my foot very slightly and the brake lights go off but as soon as i let it go the brake lights come on again. Difficult to explain in writing!

Is there any way I can adjust the brake pedal myself so it does not activate the brake lights. There is nothing at all wrong with the brakes themselves - just the lights! Thanks :)

The minivan has about 80,000 miles on it. Does this signal the beginning of a lot of repair bills, or is this an isolated problem?

Put 99 F-Taurus into the shop 4 a new battery and alternator ($107 & $259 + labor = $480). Told them I wouldn't have the money for 3 weeks or more. Because dealer I bought from always sends cars there, they said would do it for $400. I repeat time frame. They got dealor to add $400 to end of loan, allowing me to get car back. I picked the car up and drove it home, about 1 mile.

Next morning I drove 20 miles before hose to radiator fluid tank blows off from pressure. I believe it was reattached, but it was NOT clamped down. In about a minute, engine overheats, head gaskets crack, and car does not start again.

Have to move by end of the month, 3 days from now! Have been without car for 12 days. Should I expect:

1. Not pay labor from 1st job
2. Not pay for parts, labor or tow for 2nd job
3. 2 wks of car payments ($150)
4. Will lose $1000 if not out of house 12/1
6. Money for moving truck?
5. Time missed from work? ($100)

This is less than half the story.....

I can't get my '97 Saturn to turn over. It's got plenty of gas, the lights and radio are working (not the baterie), and it's almost turning over, but not quite making it. Also, for the last week, the RPM's have started reving everytime I first start the car, but then once I get going, it runs fine.
