I can't get my '97 Saturn to turn over. It's got plenty of gas, the lights and radio are working (not the baterie), and it's almost turning over, but not quite making it. Also, for the last week, the RPM's have started reving everytime I first start the car, but then once I get going, it runs fine.

the Psychic Mechanic invisions that although a battery has a 12.5 volt charge, you still need it to be able to push a current (amps) to operate the starter, a shorted battery can operate electronic equipment that doesn't need a large current. I would have the battery checked for LOAD amps. before saying it wasn't the battery, because the psychic mechanic thinks it is the battery.

It could be a multitude of things. I work at Saturn of Cerritos in the Service Department and though I am not a technician, I have seen hundreds of saturns with similar problems. First off, it is very common for saturns, especially the "S" series and the "Ion" to Rev very high when you first start the vehicle. Your problem may, and i emphasize 'may' be the battery, but if any engine lights come up on the dash, you're going to have to take it into your local saturn retailer and have them hook up what's called a "tech 2" to the car. This computer will diagnose the problem and give the mechanic a better idea of what is going on with your vehicle. Your starter may be bad as well, but your best bet would be to take it into a Saturn Retailer.

We purchase previous vehicles each and every of the time and battery subject matters continuously arise. Heres are 2 ideas that would help save it beginning & what it would want to correctly be. One automobile wasn't pushed in the winters & if left it to lengthy devoid of making use of does no longer commence both. So each and every few days i might want to commence it for a jiffy. If I waited longer then that i might want to wish a leap. i might want to easily attempt this if i change into you. yet another automobile does no longer commence & had to be jumped each and every morning. After procuring 3 new batteries we got here across out the Antenna change into the reason. by some ability draining the battery. We disconnected the antenna and have not had a difficulty because. likely no longer what's inflicting your problem yet only a heads up that something small like that would want to correctly be what's incorrect.

The two issues probably are not connected.

Sound like you have a bad starter. If you KNOW the battery is good and it is "dragging" when you start it either your starter is bad or your engine has locked up

Revving RPMs usually means a bad sensor. A Mass Air Flow sensor will do this since it is partially resposible for maintaining the rpms and fuel mixture for the engine.

Need to get the engine codes checked. The battery is most likely lo now jump it off if it will and make the next stop a parts store that will check the codes for free. I do not know fuel injection well but most likely map sensor. Could be one of several others though.

Just because the radio works does not mean that the battery has enough capacity to crank the engine. Get the battery tested. Most auto parts places will do that for free.

A cold engine will rev somewhat until it starts to warm up. This is normal.

if the battery is fine, check the fuses. might have a fuse burnt out.
if the fuses are fine then check your coil. might be burned out. you can do this easily. remove a spark plug wire and hold it near the plug, have someone try to start the car. You should hear and see sparks coming out of the wire. If you dont see any sparks then your coil is bad.

good luck

Saturn's are kinda weird , if they don't have the proper voltage they will put themselves into "cripple mode " so disconnect and charge the battery and try again
