The minivan has about 80,000 miles on it. Does this signal the beginning of a lot of repair bills, or is this an isolated problem?

depends on where you go. A dealer will cost about 20 percent more than a joe smoe shop usually. HInt to own a shop Joe smoe has to have all the same certifications as a dealer. Between $750 to $1500 depending on where you go. It is common for head gaskets to go. Once fixed will be good to go. Head gaskets themsleves are quite cheap about $75 to $150. Most of the cost is labor. Entire top of engine need to be taken apart.

Are you sure its a head gasket. gm V6 engines are famous for intake manifold gasket letting coolant into the engine.
