Maintenance & Repairs - August 2006

I have a '96 Ford Mustang with about 142,000 miles on it. In general, my car is in good condition. However, lately it has been taking two attempts to start my car after it has been parked for several hours. However, I do not have this problem if I drive to the store, and come back out 15 minutes later. My car will start on the first attempt right away. What could be causing this problem, and if necessary, how urgent is it that I get my car to a repair shop? Thanks.

My parents bought me a 1994 ford explorer with 49,000 Miles on it, but whenever I bress the breaks the squeak is really loud...and when I turn the car to the right there is a sqeak, but its not as lound at all....I know its not the brakes because I just had them changed....any ideas?

The car's been running bad and then it starting smoking out of the radiator. I was on the highway, and it was only 39 miles back to my house, so I went for it. It eventually stopped smoking, but the engine got noisy and died. A guy stopped and I asked for water. He had a couple of big jugs of pop, so we put that in the radiator. I got the car started and made it home. I filled up the radiator the rest of the way with water. No the engine don't sound so good. What can I put in it to fix it?

We have a new battery clean cables bought a starter and solenoid put it on our car it sparked at the solenoid and we were scared! Car ran alright yet, today the car lost power we moved the battery and the car started what should we be looking for on our 93 ford probe.

I need to replace a busted oil pan gasket, do I have to take the engine out of the car to do this, and if I do, do I have to buy a pricey engine crane?

I have a 2001 pt cruiser with new thermostat, water pump, and no leaks but it will over heat when I run the a/c or stop at a light. When I get going again it cools down. How can I jump power from the rad fan ignition to the battery to check the fan? I've already checked the fuses. Thanks a lot.

I've noticed what seems to be a faint whirring sound in my car when I am accelerating in 5th gear. There are no performance problems and no engine light. The noise goes away when I stop accelerating and just maintain speed. Perhaps it's just my being sensitive because I recently got the car, but it sounds a bit different than when I first started driving it. Any ideas?

My 89 Buick Skylark has had an overheating problem. I have checked all the hoses, pressure seems fine, water pump is good, no leaks, new thermostat, and no oil or water mix. All the gaskets have been checked and I used sealant on the gaskets I replaced. Could there be anything else I am missing?

I have a 2002 Volkswagon Jetta. Some days my car starts just fine. Other days, it may take 4 or 5 tries before it starts. I've been told my starter could be going out. Is that true or is it something else?

It is a 2001 Chrysler Sebring (automatic). I just changed the oil. It seemed extremely hot and it was practically smoking when I took the oil cap off. I don't think the oil change had anything to do with it though. It's not leaking and it was a hot day when I changed it.
My guess is that it needs a belt.

My 91' honda accord is leaking antifreeze. I put some liquid stuff with balls I bought from Checkers in it and now I don't see anything leaking onto the ground. But now, I smell the antifreeze and its really annoying. Anyone know probably is the problem. Leaky hose or hole in the radiator or both? Help anyone?
