OK, this Richard fellow lives on another planet, top end gasket set will cost 50 bucks. If this is a 2.0, they had 3 different heads so be sure to get it right the first time. I'm guessing it's a 2.2. Good engine, you will probably need to have the head milled. It's not too hard because the cam is in the block. You don't have to mess with the timing this way. Good luck. Sorry, I didn't answer your question. Yes, Nathaniel got it right on.... 550 is accurate for repair at a shop.

Warning old motors that were overheated don't like to be worked on. Many things get damaged not just the head gasket. Do a head gasket not inspect for cracks and be right back removing & replacing the cyl. head. Replace the head gasket but not notice the piston rings are weak from overheating then remove the engine and rebuild it. Correct diagnosis should include compression tests dry and wet with oil Next leak down tests. don't spend money with out knowing how the motor is sealing. Piston to cyl. walls and valves to head.

i might be able to help,, you i own a repair shop,,and do this for a living,,if it has the 4 cylinder engine in it,,they were good for head gaskets,,it will be leaking in the rear of it,,in the corner,,it usually cost around 350 bucks parts and labor,,because when the head is removed it has to taken to a machine shop,,and trued up,,this is done to prevent it from ruining another head gasket,,i would also replace the head bolts,,they do stretch out,,and are use less to try and re-use,,it usually takes a few days to get all this done,,but i have done a lot of them,,and have never had one come back on me,i hope this helps you good luck with it.

The cost varies depending on the amount of repairs the head needs to be able to remount correctly. If no head damage or warping then the labor is not too expensive (on a 4 cylinder). If the head needs repairs, check to see if the head is cheaper to replace through a salvage yard before repairing. You may be able to save $$$$$ by resurfacing a used head as opposed to trying to repair a damaged head.
Good Luck

P.S. No major head repairs needed. You should be able to have the repair done by a respectable shop for around $500-$600 with a 1 year warranty

There are four or five cars many mechanics will not work on. The Cavalier is one of them, because it breaks down so quickly and predictably, many profesionals are tired of things being blamed on them. I bought a broke down cavalier for my daughter, for next to nothing. When I tried to have it fixed, I had to take it to the next town, because noone would accept it. Even the guy in the next town, fixed it and said to sell it quick. By the way, it had a bad head gasket. If you fix it yourself, sell it. If you pay to fix it, it will be tough to win in the long run. GOOD LUCK!

Do it yourself for about $5. Buy the gasket and some sealent. Then remove the bolts and replace the gasket, put the sealent and replace the bolts.
