I have a 2001 pt cruiser with new thermostat, water pump, and no leaks but it will over heat when I run the a/c or stop at a light. When I get going again it cools down. How can I jump power from the rad fan ignition to the battery to check the fan? I've already checked the fuses. Thanks a lot.

hook a wire up to the red wire and connect it to a relay you can buy at your local hardware store, that relay will act as the switch to power the fan when the ign. is on. make sure you put a fuse into it, but it should work

If you have checked the fuses, there are a couple of other places to go, but the first place is to start the car, and stand in front of it and listen. Have a friend turn the A/C on MAX. Did the fan come on?
If not, you have pretty much eliminated MOST of the other possibilities. Most likely the fan relay has failed.
You can buy one at pretty much any auto parts house for <$15.00.
Your owner's manual should be able to direct you th the correct relay and its location.
If your owner's manual is missing, you can find the location at the local library in the reference section
If your library is relatively up to date, they may also have ALLDATA or Mitchell On-Demand. These are professional level resources and are very good.
Both of them have a component locator function that will show you exactly where to find this relay.

BE VERY CAREFUL about by-passing circuits or adding wire that doesn't belong there. If you aren't very sure about what you are doing, you can wind up draining your battery during the night, or worse, wake up to an ash heap where your car once stood.
Unfortunately I have seen that!!

Good Luck

simple way to find out if the fan is working. is to open the hood after you drive for a while. you should be able to see or hear the fan kick on. jump starting the fan can blow the resistor, if it equipped with one, if the fan does not kick on and the temperature increases, you may have a bad fan relay. don't forget that normal operating temperature, is around 210 degrees f. you may also check to see if the is a lot of dirt build up in the radiator core or the evaporator core, by looking through it or shining a flashlight through it when the engine is cold, if the fan kicks on while sitting at an idle and the cores are clean you may have some build up on the inside of the radiator, if so try flushing the system

I would have to agree with some of the answers you already got. Turn on the A/C and see if your fan comes on. If not than the fan is not getting the power it needs. The most likely cause is the relay. I would not recommend trying to check your fan if you're not used to working on electrical circuits especially with todays cars you could short something than you'd be in a bigger mess than you are now.

if you are only checking the fan, just connect a wire with an alligator clip on each end, from the + side of the battery to the + term of the fan motor followed by a ground. you will know right away if your fan is operational or not.

please do not alter this system,,on this vehicle,,it will cause you problems,,if you want to check it,,you can run a hot wire to the wire on the fan its the red one,,and make sure you have a good connection,,if the fan works its OK,,if not you know its the fan,,there is also a relay on this vehicle that works with the air conditioner,,and it is supposed to turn on the fan ,,when you turn on the air conditioner,,it sounds like your relay isn't working on it,,i have replaced a few of them because of this,,there not hard to replace or expensive to replace either,,on the wire for the fan there is two main wires,,one is a ground,,you will have to ground it good for it to work,,but the relays on these vehicles do go bad,,we own one,,and i own a auto repair business here in Tennessee,,i hope this helps,,good luck with it.,,the wire may be blue on the fan for the hot side,,i looked and we have two vehicles with different colored wires on them.
