I thought I answered this one check the two vacuum lines at the front axle for cracking or just pulled off. The axle needs vacuum to disengage and engage there is also vacuum valve too.Look at the hoses follow them up to the pump and valve look for places where wear Thur can happen.

the main trouble-free subject with out engagement on that 4 wheelpersistent device of that age is the circulate case encoder/motor (shift motor). the placement sensor interior it relatively is going to actual corrodes and can't grant feedback to the circulate case administration module. if it is so with the truck in question, the only fix is to swap the shift motor assembly that's over $500.00 on the broking. I replaced mine with a re-synthetic one from Napa for around $one hundred sixty.00 approximately 3 years in the past. yet another trouble-free failure is the vacuum turn on the circulate case which engages the front axle, yet whilst it is going undesirable it many times sticks in the have interaction mode and could no longer enable the front axle disengage for unfastened 2 wheelpersistent mode. stable luck.

the encoder moter on back of the transfercase is stuck in 4hi you need to replace it. it is the only way to fix it the costs around 500 dollars you can only get it from the dealer then you have to clear the code it sets you can have dealer do this or disconnect battery for 30 seconds that should do it

check your wiring underneath and the vacuum lines or you could just unplug the four wheel drive at the plug on the axle shaft just remember to plug it in before you go play in the mud

those models had a problem with the axle housing cracking on the passenger side, if it is aluminum, and would bind enough to keep the fork engaged. if you have the steel axle housing more then likely you have a dirty connection or bad solenoid
