Which engine do you have? 2.3 liter, 3.0 liter, or 4.0 liter? All info is helpful.

Update: The PCV valve should be installed in the top of the valve cover towards the rear of the engine. It is black with a chrome colored body about 2 inches long and about 1/2 inch wide. There will be a rubber hose running from the top of the PCV valve back to the throttle body. A rubber grommet is used to hold the valve in place in the valve cover.

It should be on a tube going out of the valve cover. It is possible someone has removed it and not replaced it. This would acount for a very dirty engine.

I believe the PCV valve is located in line on the crankcase tube that is connected to the intake.

It is inline to the valve cover. it is attached to a vacuum hose, and it sucks oil vapor from the valve cover. If you trace some vacuum lines, you should find it. If you take it out and shake it and it clicks, it's good. If it doesn't it's bad.
