Sounds like loose grounds at the transmission and the flashers are causing the GM 700 R-4 electronic controlled transmission to use the instrument panel as ground Any recent electrical repair new battery cables or battery? remember what happened when the problem first happened. This truck was humming along for 13 years no problem now this?

First off, don't run out getting quotes for a rebuild...
Your truck has a 4L60E transmission which is shifted by the computer. It needs to see a vehicle speed sensor input so that it can shift the transmission. No speed signal, no shift. Your speedo is not working and the trans is not shifting !!! Basically the computer thinks the truck is not moving, so it will not upshift the transmission. Try replacing the Vehicle Speed Senor first, before digging in deeper.
I always use this analogy when talking with my customers....
When a light bulb burns out, you first change the bulb.
So try the speed sensor first !!!!

you may have a body computer bad or bad wires to the transmission, there are also electronic solenoids in the transmission for shifting that may not work properly, have you checked the fluid level to see if it is full and make sure the fluid is not burnt? I would advise to have a transmission shop look at it

have you tried shifting in to first to start and shifting up I had a problem similar to that and I shifted it into first gear and them worked back up to drive it ended up being the lower reverse clutch had burned out you may be having this problem or it could be worse if it is a new tranny isn't cheap but you can generally get a good used one for a decent price or try rebuilding the one you have
