Hey what's wrong with my car? When I push the gas quickly, the engine will almost stall out then back-fire. When I am accelerating, it will become unsmooth (jerky). It idles fine and it starts up fine.

For stick shift, when you want to slow down or stop the car, is it better to downshift one by one (as you slow down using the brake)? Or is it better to just go neutral and just step on the brake?

I have a 2001 Hyundai Xg300L at around 65,000 miles on it, it's a good car and no problems with it until now but im not sure what it is. One day i was driving above 50mph. the car was driving normal when all of sudden it "jumped" and i saw that the gears automatically shifted from 5th to 3rd gear when I switched to the "shift-tronic" and the engine light turned also. When i pressed on the gas it just reved loud but did not get out of 3rd gear. I had to pull over and put it in neutral and I even tried to manually shift from the "shift-tronic" but it was just stuck in third no matter what. I had to turn it off and the car/transmission was back to normal starting from 1st when I turned it on again. But now my engine light is still on and it jumped from 5th to 3rd again about a week later. It looks like the problem is going to get worse if I don't do something about it. Sounds to me like a computer thing or something connected to the transmission, but im not sure. Do you know? Thank you

I'm better with computers and cameras than cars. I understand that having an engine with a cracked block is bad, but why? What exactly happens and what would be the sequence of events? My old van now has a cracked block, courtesy of a shop that I fully regret taking it to. Despite this, it drives fine and the engine is a heck of a lot stronger than it was when I took it in.

I guess the cracked block means its on its last legs, but can I just keep driving it until it dies? How will it die? What should I be looking out for?

I'm just looking to understand the problem better...

I previously asked what the cause of oil coming out of my exhaust might be, and a couple of answers suggested that it may be soot mixed with water, not oil. I have since done some closer investigation of the black stuff, and it does appear to be soot after all. So my question now is, can I fix this problem myself, or do I need to take the car to a mechanic?
