I previously asked what the cause of oil coming out of my exhaust might be, and a couple of answers suggested that it may be soot mixed with water, not oil. I have since done some closer investigation of the black stuff, and it does appear to be soot after all. So my question now is, can I fix this problem myself, or do I need to take the car to a mechanic?

It's a 1990 Ford Falcon XF, which I'm pretty sure is unique to Australia.

Make , model , and year of the car would help. but without that information, black soot tells me that there is a excessive amount of unburnt fuel . One reason for this could be that your engine could have what is called "cold" spark plugs. "cold" meaning that the plug does not match your engine's heat range. If your engine has a carburetor, the fuel / air mixture has too much fuel and it needs to be adjusted. It would be a good idea to take it to a reputable mechanic.

moo71: You don't have a problem.

The engine "may" be running rich, however , you also "may" be driving in slow traffic and idling the engine for long periods.
Both will cause soot to build up in the exhaust.
Take the car for a weekend trip 50 -100miles on the highway at highway speeds. I'll bet the exhaust will be a nice light Grey color when your done.

Don't create problems where they do not exist.

How much of a problem is this? If the engine is running all right and the air is not getting very polluted you might consider ignoring it. It depends on how much of a nuisance it is. For some vehicles a little bit of this is normal. This could cost a bundle to resolve and you are not really gaining much.
