my car sounds like a drill when i go to start it and it wont start?

the 25 year auto tech might be right but it is really unlikely... its about a 99% chance its your solenoid... this part engages the gears between the starter and flywheel, if it doesn't engage the gears it sounds like a drill free spinning... this might be able to be replaced, but some makes and models you have to buy a new starter... there is a 1% chance you have stripped gears like mister 25 yeras auto tech said... in which case you still need a new starter with a new gear... the metal of the fly wheel is much harder than the gear on the starter so the gear on the starter will brake or strip without hurting the flywheel... best of luck to you its an easy fix...

all these people have no clue the starter has a gear on the end of it it interlocks with the flywheel to turn the motor over one or both of the cears are bad or the starter could just be lose but you prob need starter and flywheel

if it dont turn over at all and it just makes that whining noise then you either need to get a new starter or get yours rebuilt...new ones are very expensive but you could probably get yours rebuilt at a machine shop for $20-$30

the starter gear is not engaging with the ring gear on the flywheel. it is just freespinning. the solenoid is not working properly. replace it ,or just get a new starter.

CHECK YOUR STARTER, OR EVEN YOUR BATTERY. IT COULD BE TO THE HOT WIRES GOING TO YOUR STARTER FROM THE BATTERY.. NOT SURE WHAT KINDA CAR YOU HAVE. OR YEAR... BUT START THERE FIRST..... GOOD LUCK.............
