is there a way to trade it in that will not cost me down the road?

I have a 2006 Kia Rio. I got into a wreck and totalled it and I only had liability insurance.

I am now paying 3500 dollars to fix it (although the repair costs are at 6K... I have a friend in the business). The car was purchased for 6K, although I recieved it for free as a gift. The car is still worth about 10-13k in good condition.

All of my friends are telling me that I should just buy a new car. The issue is that I am a full time college student who is a waitress and I don't have that kind of money, unless I finance the car and I have far too many other things to pay for.

I'm just curious.... What would you do in this situation?

The Prius is out of warranty and has over 100K miles. It needs a new "main computer" and a catalytic convertor. I was quoted a black book value of 4000.00 trade in value when the car was just under 100,000 miles. I still owe @ 8000.00 on the loan and was hoping to keep it until the load was paid off but I'm getting nervous - the repairs are getting costly. I just am not sure if I should continue to repair, trade it in or repair and then trade it. If I decide to trade it in, should I get it repaired first or take the hit on the trade in?

i am thinking about scrapping my car and i heard that they only pay you for the metal, so does that mean i should remove the seats and speedometers and ashtrays and whatever i can and try to sell them seperately? or would the scrap yard pay more if it is intact? (i really don't know anything about this stuff)

I doubt I will buy an American car for different reasons, like poor quality and too much of my money would go to the wealthy top dogs.

I am considering Japanese, but are there any others that might be worth it? German maybe?

Here is additional info about preferences of mine if you want them:
1. A car that costs less than about $20k to $25k.
2. Roll down windows (they work well for a long time and are less expensive to repair).
3. A car that is inexpensive to maintain.
4. A four door car with adequate head room (more height for the rear passengers than average).
hard to avoid so maybe ignore -- 5. A car that gives at least pretty good gasoline mileage.
6. A stick shift vehicle.
7. Anti-lock brakes and cruise control.
8. A car that is easier to work on than average (not as cramped for space under the hood).
9. A car that is a little more elevated than average (because for example it might be a little better at traveling over snow).
10. An option of four wheel drive.

I'm looking to get a new car or pick up truck.
Here are some of the things that it must have:

4 wheel drive.

Decent fuel economy.

Enough space in the trunk or bed that I can haul garbage to the dump every week.

I don't care about it being super fancy or having a bunch of accessories, I just want something reliable that I can drive to work everyday and isn't going to have transmission problems or whatever else in 2 years.
I was leaning towards a pick up truck, but if it's a car with enough of a cargo area, I'll consider that too.
Any ideas?

Give it back once people catch up with their payments? How may payments do you have to miss to get your car repod? Oh and are repo men basically theives? Do they have the right to take cars away? I ask because we were talking about repo men and how it works, and we couldn't figure out if they resell the car, or give it back to you.

hey friends, I plan to travel several hundred miles to look at a 1965 mustang thats for sale. I know (remember) very little about them , this was the first car (simular) that i ever owned in 1966 (darn how time flies). the photos i received look fanastic. red coupe with 289ci 2brl carb auto. it was advertised to be in almost? show condition, and redone about 2 years ago, no rust. i am not a dealer, reseller show person etc. and really don't know exactly what to look for. i plan to keep this car (if bought) and pass it on to one of my children. i can use and would really appreciate any advise you could pass on, SOUNDS like an honest person that i have been talking to (current owner) but who knows. did the 65's come with A/C vents in dash are were they all the hang-on type? how is rack & pinion steering different than the original? how do i check the compression and what should it be? what would be a fair (average) price if its in show or almost show?? condition. Thanks in advance

My husband and I finally found a car we want and can afford. It isn't on the lot yet...the sales person said it is coming on Nov 15. We are going in on Monday to leave a down payment so once the car does come in, it's ours. Now my question is, when do we negotiate the price? Before we leave the down payment or when we come to do paperwork on the 15th? He said all of the paperwork will be done on the 15th but I don't want to leave a down payment if that locks in the price. We are planning to negotiate with him.

Okay here are the issues, so we have a 2006 GTI and my brother, my dad, and I all love it....but, my mom does not. We have to get a fourth car because me and my brother will both need one for jobs next summer/ the GTI is awful in the winter and we live in Minnesota so...yeah...can't really avoid the cold and snow. My mom wants to sell the GTI and then get 2 new or used cars, one of which would have to be a good winter car. We only need 3 in the winter...how can we convince my mom that we don't have to sell the GTI?!?! Were not paying any payments on it and the only reason she doesn't like it is because the tires on it are bad...but those can be changed, easily....ugh advice please? real advice, none of that..."that car sucks anyways" because I don't care then seriously.
