don't get it from a private party, you will not know what all is wrong with it, you might want to try a lease to own car, from a 2000 to 2004 (year) it would be reliable for you and last for years

If you're going to college, you're going to be on a student budget, so plan on staying economical for 4+ years of college and the 1+ years afterwards in your new job. You may consider a new Hyundai with their 5 year / 60,000 miles waranty to get you through this phase without having to waste any time dealing with car problems.

If you're working now and need a reliable car, get any new car you like and can afford so you can get that factory warranty to cover at least 3 years ... your taste in cars will change at the end of three years and hopefully so will your salary. You'll have the bug to upgrade then.

If you don't know what you want, I would suggest a good used car to get you around for now until you develop your taste in cars ... see if anybody in your family has a hand-me-down that they're tired of and are willing to part with.

Usually as peops get older, they end up with a certain taste in cars. If you're not there now, then plan on being flexible until you know for sure.

I started with a new Honda Civic because I didn't want to deal with maintenace but I outgrew that and am now driving a Trans Am and two V-twin choppers because I eventually found that max horsepower with lots of noise is what I like. US car quality sucked before but they're a whole lot better now ... cover your butt with a factory warranty on any new car, espedicaly a US car, just in case ... unless, you want to be a mechanic and need to get some hands-on experience.

A toyota lasts up to 200,000 miles. My toyota has 81,000 miles and it is 4 years old. It has only had one repair for the air-conditioner.
