diesel has usually been used as the workhorse where petrol is the performance option.

However because diesel is more fuel efficient over the last 5-10 years the major companies have been pushing it as a possible replacement for petrol.

Notably with the introduction of turbochargers to the diesel engine (TDI = turbo diesel injection)

The german 3 (audi, bmw and merc) are making diesels that nearly match petrol equivilents such as 5 series etc - but none that completly match petrol yet (bar lemans ^^)

Just wait every one new emission standards will kill off the black smokers. The bottom of the truck will look like a chemical plant or a whiskey still. with preburn chambers and post converters and Nox vessels with diesel injector to burn off excessive NOX and you will need a truck to carry all that stuff around. Manufactures will try to do this and diesel fuel economy will drop 10% to 15%. That kills most of the diesels advantage and if diesel prices remain as high as Gasoline there is no advantage. With same levels of equipment . . . petrol cars are better . . . . but with custom eqipment like CRDi and other advanced engines diesel cars can compete with petrols too . . .
while petrol cars can use turbochargers etc. too but when at the same level of equipment . . . . petrol is much better.
