Buying & Selling - March 2007

[Selected]: All categories Cars & Transportation Buying & Selling

I bought a car with the help of a bank and after two months It needed to have the entire engine replaced. I call the same lot and they said that it was as is, but they knew the car was bad when they sold it to me. The first time I brought it home the next day it was making weird noises and acted as if it didn't want to go and I called them. They said that it just needed an oil change. When I got the oil changed the people at lub shop told me that I had water in my engine. It all went down hill from there. It's been slightly over a month since i've had the new motor installed.

Car was towed by towing company. The vehicle stood there for over 50 days (long story), and the car was set for auction to satisfy towing lien. All formal notice was given, and vehicle was auctioned. The only thing is, the towing company who has a clear interest in the auction, is the one who ultimately bought the vehicle for 700 dollars (the car is a 2005 Audi A4 convertible worth over 30k.)--they were probably the only bidder. The FL statute doesnt have any guidelines for the actual conduct of the auction and doesnt say the towing company running the sale can't bid, but it seems like this is just plain wrong, and reeks of foul play. They probably hid the car and didnt even present it at the auction. It seems unbelieveable to me that noone would bid even that small amount on this beautiful brand new vehicle. Any advice?

Here is the situation:

I have a 1998 Ford Taurus-AIr and Heat broke-No warranty left on it-dearlship wants 1,500 to fix it-I owe $3,000 left because I bought used over a year ago.

I live in 100 degree weather during summer so I need the A/C.

I am buying a brand new car in January 2008 from a settlement coming this lat fall.

What I want to do is trade one mor time my taurus for another used car to get me to the end of the year. Can I trade in the taurus with a $2,500 remaining balance for another used car around $5,000 so I have heat and A/C thru the remainder of the year.

What do I need to know to make this happened about trade in's and dearlships?

I know I will be upside down on the loan and it be placed on the other car. How much cash should I offer at trade in? And will they even take it with the ac/heat broken knowing its a crappy car?

Any tricks of the trade or info in what I can do in this situation will be most helpful.

I want to by either an Audi A4 or a Toyota SUV. I would like to know experience people have about finding the true cost, the amount of fair margin/ markup that dealers need to make, and then advice on tactics to negotiate (e.g. ask for manager; go at end of month; pay cash; go in with AAA cost assessement)?

What are unneeded fees/ options which I can negotiate out?

Where do they make money which are good things I can negotiate as a win win for them?

There is a car dealership here that advertises that "if I dont sell you a car, I will give you a thousand dollar". Is this false advertisement? I dont know. I can go there with bad credit, no money, and 3 or four times a month and make 3 or 4000 Dollar!!!!! Off course there are fine prints, but they dont say it on TV advertisement.

The process should protect both the buyer and seller. The seller advises that the lender can give the buy a duplicate title document when buyer pays with a cashier order. I wonder if this is the proper way.

I have a 1999 Ford Tauras LX sedan with a 3 liter engine. It has just gotten to 117K miles. From what I have read this is considered mid way miles for modern cars. 1. Is 1999 considered modern. 2. Is it correct that 117K is midway. 3. should a 145 Horse power engine have enough power for a strong take off.
