How can bankrupcy give you a fresh start in credit? You hear all these tales that failing will give you a fresh start, is that true? And how?

I do not have a great excuse other than I was laid off when something was reported on my credit. Have you ever been successful at getting something removed from your report that wasn't there "in error?" I do not know if it is even worth trying.

What are the odds of having a negative item removed from your credit report that's been unpaid every month up to a year? Do you think it's possible? If so, how would you do it???

Well I got approved for a $10,000 credit limit. One is a visa($5,000) and the other is a master($5,000). I also get a savings account with new millennium bank. The credit status report said: none required, Account Acceptance says: Gauranteed, and the credit card type is: fully secured. acceptance deadline is 03/05/07.
I have to send in $37.50 to get both cards, or just $29.00 to get one. Now my question is..... Am I being scammed or is this how you do the whole credit thing because I want at least 1 card! I dont want to hear people tell me to never get a credit card BC that is not what I'm asking, I will pay my bill every month, and I dont want to hear life stories about you credit debt problem BC IM NOT YOU! I just simply want to know: is this (besides applying) the first step to getting my card.

If someone steals my credit card and uses it, the bank reimburses me. But surely visa or whoever doesn't eat the cost. Does the merchant that sold the merchandise end up having to eat it, since they didn't check to see if the card was actually the user?

I'm trying to fix bad credit so I applied for a credit card on line and when the bill for a $59.00 annual service fee arrived before the card, I decided that I didn't want it. While I was going through all the pages of the on-line application there was one page that stated that I had thirty days to cancel, but the paperwork I got in the mail says nothing about this and to access this page on-line I would have to go through the process of applying for another card (not happening). Also, the paperwork that came with the card says that I have to call a phone number to activate the card before it can be used. QUESTION: Do I need to call or e-mail these people and tell them I don't want the card anymore (it hasen't been 30 days yet), or, if I just don't activate the card does that mean the account has not been verified and so then it becomes null and void?

I am thinking about cleaning up my credit myself because I have heard that this can really happen . I do not want to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars just for someone else to do this. I saw a do-it- yourself credit repair kit at office depot for like $30.00 and I was hoping to hear mature answers/opinions from people who may have had credit issues and to just see who was able to repair their credit on their own successful without paying big money to these scam artists making big promises. Thanks in advance! ;)
