I work in an office and I'm probably one of the youngest people there.

Well, recently, I was promoted up into management because of my charisma, personality, and good work ethic. But I'm having some difficulties.

See, all my life I've been used to working from "the bottom of the food chain." So this is a big change for me. Mostly, I feel people don't take me seriously when I tell them to get back to work or to finish a task. It might be because of my age or because I'm the NEW management.

In any case, my question is how do you manage people and NOT seem like the "bad guy?"

I mean, sure, I could be the angry boss nobody likes, "DO THIS! DO THAT!" But that's not the kind of guy I want to be associated as or known for.

How do you be the tough but fair manager?

So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to college to go into the teaching field, possible either as a university professor, or the other extreme; teaching kindergarten. I love children and teaching them, but I also don't want to go through life without being comfortably financially stable. I was wondering what is the normal pay for this occupation? What kind of degree is necessary for higher wages? And would it be best to work at a private or public school?

I just started working at a new job about 5 weeks ago. My boss has gone on vacation for the next two weeks so I am in charge. But, I am new and still learning the ropes.

The owner of the company is mean and nasty. He routinely yells at people openly in the hallway and is very impatient and abrupt. I have not had to deal with this yet because he deals directly with my boss.

I will probably have to interface with him directly for the next two weeks while my boss is gone. I don't know how to react if he yells at me. He does it with everyone so I know not to take it personally, but its not fun to be yelled at when you are trying to do your job.

I know that I will be leaving this job soon - probably after my boss returns from vacation, but in the meantime need to deal with the stress while I am working there.

Has anyone ever dealt with an rude boss?

FYI: In the last two years I have made approx. 10,000.00 in OT each year the amount has doubled and I do not see it easing up anytime soon. Their thinking is do more with less (yeah). So now they are wanting to change my status from hourly to salaried without a rate increase. I thought this was unfair, so I have done some research and they cannot force the change since I was not hired on that way. Also there is no difference in hourly vs. salary employees where I work as far as benefits go. I do have a slight advantage if I am pressured to negotiate, there is no one that can just step into my shoes immediately (Senior Graphic Designer, 16 years for inhouse agency, I know the biz well). Don't get me wrong I know no one is irreplaceable.I would like to know what other people think is a fair increase to ask for. If I am expected to change over and still work those hours. Help Please! PS, they want to switch the entire department of 21 over. Not just me. Its all about the bottom line

I enjoy working with and analyzing figures, and thinking of changing career from being a debt collector to become a statistician. However, although I am highly numerate, I have trouble getting to the interview stage when applying for jobs. The main reason is that I have no work experience of a statistician.

Does anybody know where I can get such work experience from?

Thanks
