I work for a big retail store (cheap one) and well some employees are staying like 2 more hrs after their 8 hr. shifts but are not getting paid overtime. Then they have to cut the hours the next day by going in 2 hrs late to keep them from going over the 40 hrs. a week. I have refused to stay because I don't think its fair we are not getting our overtime pay, they pay us crappy enough as it is. They have been getting in my case for refusing to stay but I still leave as soon as my shift is over. My other coworkers seem upset with me because I'm refusing to stay and help them out. I think they are letting the company take advantage of them. So I'd like to know if what the store is doing is legal? Also some advice on how to deal with this. Serious answers please, thank you.

My dad sent off a cheque for £90 to a company in Jersey, along with an order form for some DVDs. He received 2 of the DVDs which cost total £15 so he called them to ask about the others he ordered. He was told they were out of stock but he should receive them within the next two weeks. Then a fortnight later when he had not received any further products from the company he called again, only to be greeted by a recorded message stating the company had gone into administration and gave an address to write to if there were any problems. Well, my dad wrote a letter asking for either the products he had ordered, and paid for, as the cheque had been cashed, or for a refund of the money he had overpaid (about £75). He received a letter back stating that he could not have the money back as there was no money left to pay him back with????? Surely this can't be right? I understand he would have better protection had he paid with a credit card but surely he is entitled to a refund somehow?

I have finished my degree which has nothing to do with finance or accountancy but I want to become a tax advisor. I haven't had much success applying for trainee positions because I missed 2.1 class so I have decided to do further studies to beef up my CV. I am only interested in one year post grad studies though....

completeing your order will the broker/ (we use Etrade )
take your your order at 10.00 because the broker knows you are willing to pay it and he will make higher commission out of it? Or will you get the better price of 9.00 even though your limit order was set to no more than $10.00 ?

With the economic situation the way it is, and more and more people being deeper in debt, should schools start providing finance classes in school?

Working in the financial field myself, I see on a daily basis how people don't really have any idea of how important it is to plan for the future, and most of those who think they have planned, haven't really prepared properly.

What do you think? Do you know how to lay out a monthly budget? How to invest for your retirement, whether an IRA, 401(k), or other retirement system? Do you understand how to utilize the system to receive the most tax breaks possible?

95% of America has 5% of the total money available in America. These people consist of employees and those who are self-employed. The other 5% have the remaining 95% of the money, and are business owners and investors.

So do you want to work for your money, or have your money work for you?

well folks i really appreciate your honest reply. most of you said go for a part time job. well, i am looking for it from the past 3 weeks and haven't found it yet. if i do a part time job than i will still make the minimum payment of credit cards not more than that. what i am trying to say over here is that , i have 2 options.
1. stay with this job, get 3yrs working experience.have no savings, and pay off loan in 3 years.
2. my second option is that go chicago drive limo and payoff my all debts around $28,000 in one year. after driving limo about 6 months i will start my MBA and can look for another job after 1yr when my all debts are paid off.
I need to choose b/w these options. please also tell me which Masters degree should i pursue to get a better job in future. my BBA Finance GPA was 3.36.

I have found some property i'm interested in buying. I have found who owns this property but have been unable to reach them. I called the courthouse and there is back taxes owed. I was told that I could pay the taxes owed and if they don't pay by the first of the year the property would be turned over to me. Is this accurate? This is just the land. There is no home and the yard hasn't been mowed in two years. Any help would be appreciated

We just had a large Sweet 16 party. The lady that decorated the hall left as soon as the party was over. She expected us to pick up her decorations and return them to her. Before that she wanted our family to help her decorate and pick up some large decorations. We paid her half before the event and the rest right before it was over. She took the money and ran.
We were charged $100.00 for the hour it took US to take down the decorations.
The agreement was that she was going to do the whole thing.
Should we put a stop on the check we gave her and take her to small claims court for breach of contract ?

And my second job I am self employed. I usually come pretty close to 40 or more hours a week on my second job. What I am not sure about is I want to hold back enough Federal & State taxes so that I don't end up paying at the end of the year, but I don't want a large refund either. I am one who likes to have their money weekly. None of that refund stuff for me. I want my money now. My employer deducts Fed, state, local, medicare & social security so will I have to do that with my SE taxes as well or will I be pretty much covered? And I find many calculators but none where I can use both employer taxes and SE taxes? Any suggestions? Anyone know of any loopholes I can look into. I have 3 children and I take care of a disabled aunt as well.

Someone I know (yes, it really is someone else) has had tax withheld from his paycheck for the last ten years, but hasn't filed a return for any of those years. Any advice on what he should do? I told him to go to the IRS and file - but now I'm wondering if I gave him good advice. Should a criminal lawyer handle this?
