A small group of people I work with are looking into starting an investment club. Any suggestions, or things to watch out for?

Since the fees for these data is expensive, why can't companies just subscribe to the database for a short period of time, download the whole database on their system, then do backtesting or resell the data. I mean, since the data is raw, there won't be a copy right problem. For the newest data, you could just get it from the source like sec filings etc. Then why are companies still pay a six-figure fee for annual subscription?

I live in the midwest and am just wondering about the railroad job prospect. What does it take to be a train engineer ( the person who drives the train)? What is their base salary and what is their work week like? I love to be by myself out on the open road but I can imagine how great it would be to be on the tracks. I'm just trying to get some secondary job ideas in case my primary does not work out. Thankyou in advance.

My mother is a real estate broker for an extremely large brokerage company. It's actually the 4th largest in the World. She told me that just like Microsoft along time ago, her company is getting ready to sell within 2 years because the CEO and Founder is retiring. She said that they are offering 1000 Free shares to all the employees, and any friends and families of employees who become members free shares also before going PUBLIC WITH THIS. And they predict it will be worth atleast $20-$30 a share.

SHE wants ME to sign up as a member so I will get 1000 free shares, because if I sign up as a member under her, she will get an extra free 1000 shares on top of the 1000 free shares shes already getting. Now my mom has sign up my dad, and 22 others people already.
I heard mutual funds are better than stock trading. Which one is this? Should I sign up? I have by tonight to sign anyone I know up under me,so please tell me asap.

So, how do they debate how much to take from your taxes? This is the first year I am filing single after a divorce and we owe back taxes, they dont go after him primarily, but take both of ours? I am just wondering how they come up with how much to take from you

I hired a private sitter to take care of my special needs child. I'm not a huge company.

Firstly, the employee didn't ask...she told me she was taking a week off for her mother's funeral arrangements, then ended up taking an additional day off to get paperwork straight. Being compassionate I let her go, although it inconvenienced me severely. Since then, she has been off 5 additional off (total 11 days off) in the past 3 months, three of which was for her child being sick.. I'm starting to see a pattern. I am writing a handbook laying out clear guidelines for being employed with me, regarding sick days, funeral leave, etc. It will take effect January 1, 2007 and I will give her a copy to sign and date and hand back to me.

How should I present this to her? Give it to her before leaving for the workday? Should I discuss it with her in person to make sure she understands what the guidelines are? Was I too late in preparing a handbook or do you think I still have time?

We have been seperated from December 2005 and is in the process of getting a divorce. We have seperate address where we lived the whole of 2006. The question is can we file jointly - as we are still legally married. The 2 W2's we have has seperate address - does that make a difference? I know my seperated wife has to agree to file jointly - but just want to make sure it is legal first before I ask her. Thanks in advance.

-Houses in California are prohibitively expensive for young professionals, this would allow us to get into a nice area.
-So that one person does not have to sign all the paperwork individually and "trust" the others.
