A store has to pay for a storefront on a busy street to get good business, has to pay higher rents, has to pay more employees to manage the store, and has to pay for shipping the material from their warehouses and suppliers to each individual store.
A "online" store just pays for their warehouse and their website, and even then may not stock anything at the warehouse...It might just be shipped directly from the manufacturer to you using their shipping services. There is less overhead and a less costly warehouse. Small businesses can be run from their homes, while larger businesses may have a warehouse or suite in an area of town (or out in a smaller town) where the rent and public utilities are much less expensive.

It's all about cost of business/overhead. Renting retail space is expensive compared the monthly cost of a warehouse. On top of that, a retail store has to pay many more employees. People to help you throughout the store, people to check you out, etc. It all goes toward the end consumer price.
However, many stores (including Petsmart) that have a website will match their online price if you bring in a copy of the item on their website.

Because, the overhead (store rental, property insurance, employee wages, workman's comp., benifit packages, utilities, etc.) is very minimal. They more than likely operate from a warehouse, and as such, the overhead is extremely low.

Agree with first response. Much cheaper to maintain an on line business than a brick and mortar business.
