I'm taking an ethics course this quarter at my college. It's a very different experience from what I normally take (science related, I'm a Microbiology major), but I need to fulfill my humanities requirement. Anyway, one interesting article we had to read was Margaret Battin's Sex & Consequences: World Population Growth vs Reproductive Rights, where she proposes that every single female in the world should be implanted with a contraceptive device (such as the IUD or Norplant) alongside routine things like exams, and only when she wants to get pregnant can she have it removed. The idea is the world's population is growing too large to support us, so this is idea is in line with utilitarianism because the individuals right is being sacrificed for the greater good of the world (survival). My professor was an adament supporter of this idea and shot down every rebuttal I had to it. Frankly, I find the idea that a woman not having control over what goes in her own body to be appalling, BUT

Ok, this has been bugging for some time now. Can someone please explain to me what the heck is the difference between a function being holomorphic and a function being differentiable?

They look like the SAME EXACT THING but my textbook says that being holomorphic is stronger than being differentiable.

I think that is the most fascinating thing, especially when it changes some peoples lives totally. And when little kids, say what

I remember in physics my teacher said that running and walking ended up burning the same calories according to the formula intensity = rate * time....like if you run 6 miles and it takes 20 minutes that eqals an intensity of 120.... which is the same as if you walk 4 miles and it takes 30 minutes since that equals to be an intensity of 120? I mean it seems common sense that its harder to run than walk, but then again this formula makes sense too...

There was this guy I like. One time I called him several times on his phone. I would let the phone ring for a long time even if he doesn't answer it. This happened like 5 times a day for like 4 consecutive days. He didn't answer any of my calls.

Then after that, He seems to avoid me everytime I say hi to him. Now, many months after that incident, I don't say hi to him anymore because he ignores me. And now that I'm not paying so much attention to him, he seems to have a change in attitude. He started acting normal again and he says hi and smiles at me now.

Do you think he knows I like him? How come he didn't answer any of my calls then became unfriendly after that? And then how come he started being friendly with me again now that I'm paying very little attention to him?

I just saw this issue come up on the news. I'm sorry but shame on the media for claiming he "overacted" his parkensins. These people have obviously never experienced having a loved one that has to live with this horrible disease. My father has parkinsins disease and it's horrible to have to see him go through what he goes through. I've personaly faced this disease face to face, and the man wasn't overacting. I've witnessed my father fall flat on his face breaking his nose. I'd say the media is getting as bad as the politicians, if not worse. Do you think he was over acting? or do you think the add was sincere?

So our local Ford dealer wants to sell me a 2005 Ford Taurus with 39,000 miles. I drove it all day and on the highway and it seems like its in great shape. It's a lease program car and it was on sale for $10,600-that already seemed a low mark. Then after the guy calls me a few times today I tell him I just cant afford the payments. I tell him I can get a car for 6,000 and he decides he can sell me the taurus for that price-whats going on here? Am I in for problems with the car or what?

I don't mean to offend, but I want to know what people think.
I am studying the civil rights movement, and I want to know why there are a number of young black people that intentionally set themselves apart from the mainstream by wearing "grillz", sagging their pants, etc. I understand that people come from different cultures, but to give one's self an obvious disadvantage BY CHOICE seems to be disrespectful of the people that fought and died during the civil rights movement. These people faced unimaginable hardship, injury, loss of life, etc, all in the name of equality. Why do people set themselves up for failure, and then get angry and call others racist, when they are so obviously trying to be so different?
