I'm taking this Religious Studies class, and most of the people in the class are Christians, and some seem to be quite Fundamentalist. This is fine, and I think it is ok, for them as students, to express their beliefs, as long as that in so doing, they do not disrespect others' beliefs.
Well in my class, one student referred to the Jehovah's Witnesses as "dabbling in a cult" and another student was less than respectful about my own Hindu beliefs, acting as if it were some sort of freaky cult.
I don't know what's with this class, but for some reason, a lot of people in there seem to assume that everyone else in there is a mainstream Protestant Christian.
There could have been a Jehovah's Witness in the classroom offended. And there definitely was a Hindu offended because it was me! I didn't say anything.
But I am asking because I'd like to be a professor of Religious Studies some day.
What can the teacher do to try to keep disrespectful comments from occurring?
