I am a single mother with a 10 year old daughter. I have a master's degree in the health care field and can earn about $80 k /year. Can I live in a decent area, where there are good schools, in at least a 1 bedroom apt? I am willing to live in Brooklyn or Queens, but is it possible to live in Manhattan with the above mentioned criteria? Thanks for your help.

Maybe 30 years ago but today New York is one of the largest slums on earth. Old habits don't die? It's an old, poor, crime ridden city and the only thing tourists see is just the center of Manhatten. If they travelled around the city they would need a bodyguard and a bag to vomit into. NY is a DUMP.

I'm 15, and I'm planning to move out from Toronto to NYC, for college, meaning after i save enough money after high school. Hopefully I won't be alone, because one of my friends wants to come with me, so what would the process be? I mean, like what would i have to do to move there successfully and get into a college there? and does anyone know of any colleges or universities that specialize in the arts? (preferably dramatic arts)
If anyone can help, thanks.
And please note that i'm serious about this, not just some teenage fantasy, ok :)

Fall Foliage for a New Yorker who doesn't drive...
If you don't drive, where can one grab a bus or train to see some foliage? Maybe take a small hike, visit some quaint town, and shop?

I don't want to be in New York City to be more specific. I'd rather trek upstate or maybe somewhere else...someplace accessible by train or bus. Oh yes, and I don't want to just see the foliage outside of a window by train or bus, I'd like to be outdoors.

Do neighbors really come into each others apartments to talk and eat their neighbors food? Do friends really see each other on the streets all the time? Where's monks "Resturant" in NY where the gang eats? Where's that calzones place where george bought calzones for Mr. Steinbrenner? Oh! where does Jerry, Kramer, Elanie and George live in NY!!

Why is it that the northern areas of long isl tend to have people w/ higher incomes, better looking neighborhoods, & be somewhat safer? and it cant be b/c it's close to the water b/c thats what the southern part is too. And i have proof b/c just look at towns like bayshore, patchogue, amityville, bellport, central islip, shirley, freeport...ect. compared to north shore towns

Hi everyone, here's a chance to get an easy "best answer". Answer my question completely and thoroughly and it's yours!

Ok, I'm going to NYC on Saturday. I'm taking a bus and it arrives at 49th and 6th. This is next to Rockefeller Center, correct?
From here I need to get to Chinatown, where is the nearest station, what subway do I take and do I have to change trains at any point? What is the best point to get off to be at the "heart" of Chinatown?

After Chinatown I need to get to Columbia University. How much time should I plan to get there, and again, give me subway routes.

Then I'm returning to 49th and 6th to leave. How much time should I give myself from Columbia to there so I don't miss my bus?

Also I need to know roughly how much I can expect to spend on subway fares for the mentioned destinations.

So I need specific information on stops, lines/routes, time, and costs. This will save me time since I don't have much to spare. First person to give a thorough answer gets "best.

I am not asking about license fees and exams and physicals and all the legal requirements. I mean, after I get a license, how hard is it to actually get in a cab and be on the streets? I drove a cab briefly in Austin, Texas and was able to lease a cab easily. Is it easy to lease in NYC?

Why are there almost no white people driving cabs? I am not a racist, far from it. I ask because I assume if there were really good money to be made there would be more white people doing it.
