Stock up on quarters for the laundry. Craigslist is a great resource for things to set up your apt, or to find a room mate. Do not tip the doormen at the ATM machine, in fact do not use an ATM with a doorman. Do not make eye contact with strangers they might interpret it as a come on. Wear comfortable shoes and look like you know where you're going. Feel free to ask more questions, we NYers love to help others.

bring ambien you wont be able to sleep the first few days untill you get used to it .. new york is the city that never sleeps you can meet anyone and find anything there ... remember this all the streets run parrell to each other so it seems like you can get lost but you wont .... and if you are lost stop a cab! they are willing to help ... if you are driving and you are really messed up find a cab stop him tell him where you need to be and for 5 bucks he will have you follow him ... in the late fall early winter the buildings create a wind tunnel effect so dress for the day and be prepared for sudden gusts out of nowhere ... do not fall victim to the * cups and balls * game there is no way to win and this is set up for you to lose all your money ,,, it is a scam.. do not buy anything from a street vendor it is either stolen or a fake.. or stolen fakes ... go to a legit shop to find what you want ,,,, if you go to the clubs 20-50 bucks cover is normal so dont panic ...and do not lose your mind if your at a bar or resturant and madonna is at the table next to you celebrity sightings in new york is actually more common than in hollywood the reason is they are in new york to party and sightsee so this may happen from time to time its no big deal ... the police are friendly you can ask them anything or have then help you if you need they are not like here or anywhere else where they dont even want you near them ,,,they whistle at cute women they are just humans so feel free to use them especially if you want to know where you can find certain foods these guys eat everywhere and they know the city so try these tips i have familt that lives there and visit often but be prepared for culture shock your first few weeks

anymore questions about New York feel free to ask

Everyone has their "welcome to NYC" experience.

Despite NYC being a huge city, it can get quite lonely if you don't know many people. I would highly recommend joining an interest group.

There are a large number of social sports groups from coed touch football to soccer to kickball to dodge ball.

General tip, you'll quickly learn that you will pick up your pace in walking to almost near sprint on the sidewalk. You'll also learn to elbow people standing around on the sidewalk. Lastly, you'll realize that everything (especially groceries) are a lot more expensive in this city than elsewhere. As a result, you'll be ordering more delivery.

There are a lot of little "societies" in New York. Many states and many colleges, have groups that get together informally a few times a year. It's a way to meet people who already live there.
For college societies, contact your alma mater. For state societies, ask your US Senator's office (because they have an 800 number and young staffers who get around!)
