Maybe 30 years ago but today New York is one of the largest slums on earth. Old habits don't die? It's an old, poor, crime ridden city and the only thing tourists see is just the center of Manhatten. If they travelled around the city they would need a bodyguard and a bag to vomit into. NY is a DUMP.

- It is the Financial Capital of the world.
- it is the Media Capital of the world
- it is the Cultural Capital of the World
- It is The safest Large City In America
- it is a great place to live
- it's history is steeped in the birth of America
- it continues to be the meeting place of all Nations
- it is still the place where the World Visits, Lives and Plays
- and it continues to be the focus of jealous louts like you

Are there still some neighborhoods that are behind the curve? Yes there are, but everywhere in NY things are improving. Neighborhoods once considered not nice are moving forward and getting better all the time. There is a can do attitude here that I've never seen anywhere else in this country.

Chitown guy, I enjoyed Chicago when I was there, but you know that Chicago has many more negatives than NYC.

30 years ago this city was dangerous and dirty. Not anymore. Get your facts straight.

Oh no, it isn't. I can explain to you why it not the greatest city in the world: 1. It's crowded 2. People kill people there 3. It's way too noisy 4. It has a lot of trash 5. A lot of stores can be run down 6. You can always hear cars' horns blaring 7. Everyone is there 8. NYC is too common 9. Everybody likes it 10. Los Angeles is better! Now here are the reasons why NYC is great: 1. There are shops 2. The things in shops are nice And that ends my theory. Thank you for your time. I'll talk to you later.

what? obviously you know NOTHING because NY has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation. Florida has a very high crime rate compared to NY. Murders and rapes have all dropped signifigantly from what they were in the 80's. THATS when it was a slum. when there was crime, and peep shows and homeless on every block. Tourists see not only times square and 34th street, but also chelsea, the village, seaport, chinatown. No one needs a bodyguard and it is one of the SAFEST places to be at night BECAUSE there are so many people and so much nightlife.

In fact, 30 years ago was when New York was in shambles, when you needed a bodyguard to walk across Central Park in broad daylight (or almost ANY park in the city), when the subways were covered in graffitti, crackheads wandering Times Square and surrounding neighborhoods, prostitution rampant, etc..

TODAY, New York is the safest big city in the country and crime rates are at RECORD LOWS. Not since the 1930's has the Parks Dept had so much money available for expansion and new facilities. Not since the 1950's have the subways been so safe.

Tourists take Gray Line busses throughout Manhattan and into the outer boros, they don't just stay in Midtown. Luxury hotels have opened EVERYWHERE. Brooklyn, Chelsea, Meatpacking District. Luxury condos going up everywhere you look too.

YOU are the deluded one, you obviously have NO IDEA what you are talking about.

I'm quite the city girl (I live in DC, which has its good blocks and bad blocks), and I ADORE NYC. Yeah, it's kinda dirty and grungy, but I have never felt unsafe when I visit and walk around with my boyfriend. I HATE Times Square and would rather hang out in Union Square, the Village, Soho, and bits o the Lower East Side. I will say that I have not been above 100th Street, so I can't vouch for all of Manhattan, and I haven't visited long enough to visit any of the other boroughs. I
I eat really, really well whenever I visit (which is not as often as I would like). You will probably consider me nuts because I love the subway.

Ya know what? If you hate New York so much, DON'T GO!

Why are you deluded?

Start spreadin' the news that New York is consistently rated the safest big city in the US. I've visited just about every major city in this country (and most of the less-major ones as well), and I have to agree.

The center of Manhattan (<--correct spelling for the deluded ones) is quite nice, I agree. I don't live there, but I haven't needed a bodyguard...ever. That, and I haven't needed a vomit bag in quite some years now...and actually, that wasn't in New York, now that I think of it. Certainly, there are some not-so-desirable parts of the city, and there are parts than I avoid. However, those are the exception to the rule.

New York has plenty of problems...not the least of which is IGNORANT SPEWING by people who know not of what they speak.
The crime rate is currently low, tons of new construction have gone up in the past decade (though the OLD parts of the city are the most beautiful and interesting), income disparity is an issue but millionaires are plentiful, and tourists staying in central Manhattan is a great way to preserve Brooklyn (among other boroughs and neighborhoods) for those of us who love living here.
If you don't like NYC, stay away.

haha I'm going to assume you haven't been to Manhattan in a LONG TIME.

It is THE safest big city in the country... and far from a slum, it's also one of the most expensive...The center of Manhattan is by far NOT the only nice part of the city...but I'd assume from what you wrote that you've never really traveled there so you wouldn't know...

New York has its share of flaws (just like any other large metropolis). It may not be as good as London, Paris, or Tokyo, but it is better than the hick town you came from.
