I am not asking about license fees and exams and physicals and all the legal requirements. I mean, after I get a license, how hard is it to actually get in a cab and be on the streets? I drove a cab briefly in Austin, Texas and was able to lease a cab easily. Is it easy to lease in NYC?

Why are there almost no white people driving cabs? I am not a racist, far from it. I ask because I assume if there were really good money to be made there would be more white people doing it.

It's not hard to drive a cab in NYC. I have heard people making from $100/day to $100,000 a year of course all in cash. Nobody really leases a yellowcab in NYC, you basically just rent from companies. There are a ton of companies that own about 50+ cabs and rent shifts out for about $110/shift (12 hrs).

I would say the main reason for your Q is that white people here all are educated and want more than just driving around all day, they might think its not a profession they can show off and talk about. Most white people in NYC are white collar. Good luck!

have you been to NYC ? if so , you understand the challenges. people drive diaganol / do not follow rules of the road. they drive diagnolly to get there first. there are more than two or four lanes on a road. austin is nothing like nyc.

more crime in nyc too. drivers are mugged / robbed you go into some rough areas. get stiffed on fares. lots of hustlers there.

i do not think anyone really cares if the person is white driving .. they mainly are interested in costs / if the driver speaks enough english to understand where they want to go. you are more interested in if the person is white / can speak well if you are paying for a tour . but few people charter a driver as it's more economical to pay for a bus or walking tour.

i'm not sure why there are not a lot of white guys driving cabs. most of the white guys are smart enough to have easier jobs. cabbies can make good money .. but it is a hard job. nyc is not a breeze . it gets pretty frigid in winter. extreme temps.

there is a lot of money to make in nyc ... i would suggest airport pick ups / drop offs ? seem to be busy places and "safer" clientelle ... they probably are not carrying a gun if they just got off the plane. if they are going to a plane they are probably clean too. usually people are not too drunk / filthy to dirty the cab as would be in other places there.

Because, parking and traffic is a royal pain. Not to mention the amount of insurance you'll have to each month, and the maintainces cost to have a car. Beside, New York City, has the larges public transit in the country, and one of the cheapest. The fare on the subway and bus is $2.25 per ride, plus you can purchase money saving discount cards for unlimited travel any anywhere in the five boroughs of New York City. Now that's a huge money saver. My advice, if you're moving to NYC, don't bother getting a car. Good luck

after you get your hack license you can lease a yellow cab. As a new driver with the fleet cabs they will give you the crummiest vehicles, make sure the lights , windsheild wipers etc all work before taking any car out. You might also want to check into working for the black cars (town cars). You do not want to work for the gypsy cab compnaies.
