Hunting - December 2007

[Selected]: All categories Sports Outdoor Recreation Hunting

This guy is a very very good friend of mine. He is a dedicated hunter, both rifle and bow.He has everything he could possibly need. What are some ideas for him? Something that you can never have enough of? Something that will come in handy?
He got an elk, deer, turkey and bear this year......will be going for javelina next month.
Any help would be appreciated.

I just have to mention one more thing about my theory! The person who left me the comment saying," how would you like it if you and your family were in the woods and hunters surrouned you , and then killed you!"

Well, I dont think you relize what hunting is! It's not like a gang of hunters corner a deer! They dont go out in this huge groups like you are saying they are! They sit in a tree stand, alone!
And i've never heard when people can circle around a deer without it running away!
Lets use some common sense buddy!
People also can't just grab a gun and shoot something! They have to have hunting licenses!
So dont answer questions that don't even have the right information about them!

If you didn't read my other qusetion, you are going to be lost! lol

I dont get why people think hunting is so bad! All of them are like," the population is going down!" Well I have some information for them!

If there was no hunting what so ever, the population of animals would be VERY high. When you shoot an animal they dont feel anything and its a quick death. But if there was no hunting, animals would be all over the place which would cause them to bit hit by cars and that will NOT be a quick death. Also, hunters don't just shoot the deer and leave it there! They use it for meat! So everyone can't say that we are wasting the animals! So all you anti-hunters cant say that we are wasting or bringing down the population of animals.

If anyone has any comments that are against my ideas or with my ideas please answer so I can understand your point of view! Thank you!

Hi! I shoot at 25 yards on an indoor range with my .22LR. I like this and am happy doing it, Mom won't let me get another gun anyway.

Would my rifle be adequate for home defence if nothing else was avaliable? What I mean is, given the ranges in a house, would a .22LR have enough stopping power?

With development, our wilderness areas are smaller and smaller, and can support fewer and fewer animals. Hunting helps manage their numbers, and is certainly less cruel than what goes on in a slaughterhouse.

TENS OF MILLIONS of poor people in the U.S. live in rural areas, areas so far back in the country that a European would think of it as wilderness. And hunting provides a significant amount of their food.

Are anti-hunters more interested in their own bad feelings about hunting than they are in stopping people from starving, or in stopping animals from dying under cruel circumstances?

The reason I'm asking is because there was a video on Yahoo homepage last night with a reporter interviewing a 5 year old boy in Arkansas who was given full credit for this kill. He was with his grandpappy on a hunting trip. Doesn't the gun have a powerful kickback when it is fired that can throw an adult man to the ground? I am genuinely asking these questions because I know nothing about hunting and am trying to determine if this story was embellished or distorted.

I eat the heart. Its my favorite part of the deer personally. But I know tons of people who hunt and never eat it. I get many deer hearts to say the least. Does anyone out there know if its really that bad for you? I know the liver isn't the greatest but how about the heart? I cook it of course. lol. With some sautéed mushrooms and onions. Thanks guys.

Hi there from the UK. I've asked numerous questions here as a beginner and you've all been most helpful but I'm still a little confused. Basically I want to get in to small bore rifle shooting and the main calibres seem to be .22 and .17, and all the variants (Hornet, HMR, WMR, LR etc).

Which calibre would be best suited to indoor, 25-yard target shooting?

Also a local farmer has said if I get a licence he'll give me written permission to hunt pests on his land, including rabbits (which he says I could eat), rodents and foxes. Is there a calibre I could use for this that I could also use on the 25-yard range near me, which is limited to (I believe any variant of) .22 calibre?

Also which rifle would you recommend for me? I'm not sure if semi-autos are allowed on the range so please reference a bolt action as well as a semi-auto/

I know there's a lot here, but thanks all the same!
