I had a Mossberg 500, not a bad gun for the price. There are after market products fo the 500, to suite your taste.
Shot two Remington 870s, a little higher in price.....But well worth the money. I liked this gun so much, that I got rid of the Mossberg and will buy the 870. Someone told me that they sell the 870 in a two barrel package. One is like a 18 inch barrel, for home defense and the other is 28 inches for the field. how accurate is this claim? I don't know, but I'm looking into it. If that's the case..... I am definitely getting the 870.

The Mossberg 500A with the 18 1/2" barrel comes with a pistol grip as an accessory. Cost at Academy Sporting Goods is $240. The Remington 870 7 shot model with the 18 inch barrel cost $375. My favorite is the 870.

In my personal opinion anything made by Mossberg is total junk. Its priced lower and is a lower quality. As far as aftermarket additions you can get just as much if not more for the Remington 870. I've got one. I go hunting in the rain. Get the thing all bunged up with pine needles. Shoots still very good. Easy to strip down and clean also. Very basic setup which means a very reliable gun. The 870 has an aftermarket accessory for pistol grip or collapsible stock. Or both at the same time so you desire it!

Lots of people are going to say the Remington. I've used both, and in all honesty, other than the magazine tube deal, there's nothing that a Remington does that a Mossberg can't do better. Mossbergs have better extractors, smoother slides(especially once they're broken in a bit! My friend has one from his childhood that's fired over something like 500,000 rounds, and it's smooth as butter.) Mossbergs leave the feed ramp in the up position when the slide is forward, so there's no problem loading it, you won't bite your thumb. Remington guys always say that the Mossy has one more part than the 870, so it's easier to strip, but I disagree. Despite the higher part count, I still find the 500 to strip easier than the 870. I think it feeds from the magazine better, as well, because of the extra parts. The safety is easier to manipulate, and is almost automatic, being that it's right under your thumb, and the shell release is just as good. There's no reason to move your hands from the ready position on a Mossberg when you need to fire, but on a Remington, you have to move your finger back, away from the trigger, and press the safety, then move it forward of the trigger guard to release the slide, then back onto the trigger. Much easier to just squeeze your middle finger and thumb and have it a quick rack of the slide away from being ready to fire.

Remington 870 for sure. I have one in the cruiser. They are great. I like Benelli but they are expensive. One can put accessories on the 870 better. I like them a lot better than a Mossberg. I own both, prefer the Remington

I have owned and still own both, my mossberg is my primary home defense gun, and the remington is both for hunting and home defense. They are both hi quality guns and I have put thousands of rounds thru both with no trouble at all. The mossberg will be a little cheaper to buy and is available in more stores too.
I saw the post above mine and need to say something about the ammo you use. If you use double ought buck it will be like shooting 9, 32 caliber pistol rounds and it will go thru 2 or 3 walls before it stops. which means it may go thru and into your neighbors house. I use #8 bird shot, at close up range it will put a hole in someone the size of a coffe can and may penetrate one wall, but will most likely not penetrate the second wall and if it does there won't be enough poop left to do more than sting someone. It is much safer that buck shot when used for home defense.

The Remington is a little sturdier, the Mossburg is priced lower. Both are reliable.

Remington. I have had a couple of 870's, and one Mossberg 835. As long as the Remingtons were even halfway cleaned, they functioned flawlessly. Not so the Mossberg.

If you want to pay more $$$$$ for the Remington then get it, however it is totally unwise to do so.* Mossberg is dependable, well built at a reasonable price.* You will never need to buy another Mossberg shotgun.*
