The .22 mag rounds won't fit in your 10/22. they are both too long and to big in diameter. In addition, your 10/22 is designed for the .22 LR ammo. The bolt is not heavy enough toi handle the .22 mag. recoil and the chamber is not designed to withstand the pressures of the .22 mag. ammo. I would fully expect it to stand up to those pressures but it was not in the design specs for the barrel when it was mfg. Additionally, the ejection port and the magazine are both too short for the .22mag. ammo. If you want to shoot .22 mag. ammo in a 10/22, then you can buy a 10/22 mag rifle or a 77/.22 mag. rifle. Both are Ruger rifle a dn both are specifically designed for the .22 mag.

The question may come up about whether you can shoot .22 LR ammo in a gun designed for the .22 mag. ammo. Again, with a few exceptions, the answer is no. The bullets in .22 LR ammo are smaller in diameter than the .22 mag ammo. One exception that comes to mind is the Ruger Single Six convertable. It comes with two different cylindars, one for .22 LR and one for .22 mag. I don't know what they do about the difference in the diameter of the bullets to make them fit into the bore of the revolver. Perhaps it has to do with a specially designed forcing cone that will squeeze the .22 mag. bullet the few thousandths of an inch so that they will fit into the bore that is designed for the smaller.22 LR bullet.

No-you cannot fire 22 magnum (22 WMR) in a standard 10/22, which fires 22 long rifle (22 LR) only. There is a 10/22 magnum now, but it will not fire 22 LR.

This isn't like firing .38 Special in a .357 Mag, where the only difference is the length of the case. The .22 WMR case is also fatter than the 22 LR. The only guns which will fire both are revolvers with interchangeable cylinders.

Sorry, But NO you can't. These are completely different cartridges and are NOT interchangable. The 22 WMR(Magnum) casing is obviously longer than a 22 Long Rifle Cartridge, that is the first thing you will notice. The 22 WMR (Magnum) cartridge will not fit into a 22 Long Rifle magazine either.

Ruger does however, make the 10/22 Rifle in BOTH 22 Long Rifle and the 22 WMR (Magnum) calibers though..You just can't switch ammunition back and forth between rifles....

Finally, NO they will NOT fit into your factory magazine!!

As has been said, the .22WMR or as it's known the ".22 Magnum" is a much longer cartridge that will not work in a standard .22LR like the Ruger 10/22.

To add to the confusion, one of the best .22LR ammunitions is made by CCI and called the "MiniMag". Could this be what you were advised, to use "Mini Mag" ammo?

...john r is right ! I would hasten to add that the 22 magnum cartridge does not lend itself well to use in automatic actions, its length impairs good extraction/feeding. Manually operated actions no problem.

I have a 22 automag pistol and it jams frequently on account of this---this is why they stopped making it.

The cartridge is more than 2 times the cost of 22lr.......I have it because it is unique not because it is all that practical.

The ruger 10/22 is the only auto rifle chambered for it that I know of.

The .22LR round is not interchangeable with the .22 magnum, nor vice versa.
