The rounds designated +p give an extra 100 feet per second(fps) out of the muzzle. This means more energy (ie. power). So, your model 82 (with a 4" barrel) might throw a 158gr slug out of the muzzle at 850fps but with the +p designation it would go to 950fps. A +p+ would be at 1050fps. These are paper statistics and each gun will give different readings if a chronograph were used to measure velocity. None of the .38SPL loads have that much foot pound of energy to bother you.

For what it is worth a 4" .357 Magnum revolver will throw a 158gr slug at @ 1235fps at muzzle. Contrast that to the +p or +p+ .38SPL. Huge difference. And the muzzle energy in foot pounds is far greater.

+P are more powerful cartridges - they reach higher pressures than standard cartridges and some firearms aren't safe to use 'em with.

They're not QUITE as much of an upgrade as a .357 mag would be from a .38 special, but they definitely pack more punch.

A nice compromise if you don't want the hand-punishing .357 mag but want more power than a standard .38 special.

EDIT

David M is saying basically the same thing I am, but he has the numbers to back it up.

So if this question comes up for voting, I'm going to vote for his answer, not my own. Numbers are the basis of science, which is the only way to understand the real world.

Bravo, David!

It's made to fire .38 special. The +P just means it is a more powerful .38 special round.

The are .38 spl rounds loaded to a slighly higher pressure.

Trade it or sell it and get yourself a 357 Magnum, because you get two (2)* handguns in one (1)*... You can shoot 38's in your 357 Magnum.* It is a real man stopper.*
