I eat the heart. Its my favorite part of the deer personally. But I know tons of people who hunt and never eat it. I get many deer hearts to say the least. Does anyone out there know if its really that bad for you? I know the liver isn't the greatest but how about the heart? I cook it of course. lol. With some sautéed mushrooms and onions. Thanks guys.

Alish:
You want me to take my question elsewhere. Yeah its dumb of me to post a question about game in the hunting section. So stupid of me. Next time I'll post it in the Vegetarian channel. My mistake.

Naw, Kevin, you're in the right place cuz this is where the hunters get together to talk about hunting and related subjects. Apparently some people just don't know that there is a relationship between hunting and cooking what you kill. Alishase sounds like some bubblehead that wondered into the wrong section herself. With any luck, she will wonder out and be a pain in the butt to someone else. See what drinking the cooking sherry will do for you?
I sure hope there is nothing wrong with eating the heart of a deer because it is one of my favorite parts, too. I do enjoy the liver, too. Organ meats such as the liver are full of cholesterol and are probably not all that good if you eat too much of it. But liver and onions are okay once in a while. I know of no reason why a deer liver wouldn't be just as good (or bad) for you as beef or pork liver.
I agree that the heart is delicious cooked as you said but have you ever tried it baked with some dressing in it? If I am the only one eating it, I will just use some Stove Top dressing mix. Cut off the top of the heart and wash it out thoroughly. Make the dressing according to the directions and fill the heart cavity with it. If you have som left, you can just put it into the pan around the heart to help hold the heart upright. I bake it in the oven and it is delicious.

I can't imagine why eating a carefully cooked heart of a healthy deer you shot yourself would be bad in any way.
The liver, as some posters have already noted, is a different story. And I would definitely stay away from raw meat.
I'm not into organ meats, myself, but that's just my personal taste. People should stop "laying down the law" about these things as if they were matters of fact rather than personal taste.
Enjoy!
EDIT
Ah, princezz has introduced some new facts! I didn't know that.
Maybe I was wrong and you should go with her advice. Although wouldn't careful cooking kill any virus or bacteria?
Grrr now I'm not sure. You better investigate further.

Well, strictly from a cholesterol standpoint, all organ meats are not good for you. Now that's not to say you'll drop dead the moment you eat them. I have had heart " issues" for about 7 years.Take all kinds of meds for it and have had a number of stents. Supposed to go lo cholesterol. Happen to like liver, heart and tongue. I get hell from my wife when I eat it so try not to do it around her.
Other meats can be equally bad. I happen to like coon but it is a little on the high cholesterol side too.
So, yes in today's world, a Doc will tell you its bad. I cut my heart into slices, boil them and fry them and then simmer them with a little bar-b-que sauce. Guess, I'm just a heathen but God put this here for me to eat so there it is.
Now if the concern is Crutzfeld- Jacobs disease, then you're screwed if you eat any venison that is infected with it ( Chronic wasting disease, spongiform encephalitis)
No worse than eating a newlywed wife's cooking.

My dad used to eat the heart every time he killed a deer. I don't think he did it this year, but I could be mistaken. I don't think that it is bad for you at all. There are some recipes on the web. I don't personally eat wild meat, but my husband and children love venison, however, none of them eat the heart. And for the people that are saying that CWD is in the deer now, it is in some, but if it is suspected the processor will know. We had a disease similar to blue tongue and the processors here in KY wouldn't even process a deer with it. They called you and told you to come pick it up and get rid of it.

I personally love deer heart myself. I've eaten them for years with no ill effects. My favorite is the first deer of the year. Dinner the next night is "deer heart oriental stir fry". Absolutely fantastic!!!! An addition for princezz's concerns: If you are hunting in an area that is free of CWD there should be no problem. There has never been a confirmed case of any person contracting the human form of this disease from eating contaminated venison. The same disease has been present in sheep for decades (scrapies) and has never been passed from sheep to humans either.

I don't eat any organs of any animal. If i had to I would, but i personally just don't want to. If your that worried about it, ask a doctor. It can't possibly be any worst then mr. disgruntled teenager spitting on your food at fast food. It's probably safer then the local chinese buffet. So, if you like it, and have no problems, go for it. Its all about personal choice. Some people eat veggies, some eat hearts. I like venison, and other wild game. Why people gotta freak out, is beyond me.

Now that deer have the equivalent of 'mad cow' disease...it's called CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) they advise that you don't eat the organs or any meat by the spine. Last time I had a deer processed they wouldn't even leave bone on the chops...they said they can't cut into the bone as it could taint the meat! They say if cooked properly it isn't a problem...of course they said that at first about mad cow, and just look what happened there! Good luck!

The only thing wrong with eating venison heart is that it is organ meat and therefore high cholesterol. We used to do that all the time. We got our deer and grilled the heart and liver over, an open fire, seasoned them just right and ate them with corn or flour tortillas.
Best.
