I've always been atheist but my girlfriend is a christian and has a very religious family. Religion has always fascinated me and I would like to read the bible. I'm not trying to find faith or anything I'm just trying to further understand it's message by actually reading it myself and not just listening what other people say about it. The thing is aren't there tons of different versions? What are the differences? What one would you suggest I read and why?

and a sub question..would you think in your religion my girlfriend would go to hell if she eventually married me, being an atheist?

Especially from people claiming to believe like you. I myself find Christian fundamentalists to be highly annoying , frequently ill informed, and anti-evangelical (meaning they do the opposite of spread the Gospel)

what i mean to say is when Hitler killed so many jews was it the fault of Christianity? if i would say yes then it would be only falsehood nothing else. similarly we have black sheep in every community. whenever some one talks about alqaida or jesh-e-Muhammad they are called as Muslim terrorists but when they talk about organizations like Irish republic army they are only named as IRA not Christian catholic terrorists. so why only Islam to be blamed when Quran says that if you kill even one innocent human being it is as if you have killed the whole of humanity. why is western and American media trying to create hatred against Islam? please be respectful with your answers and i want serious answers.

if that movie is going to determine whether someone decides to love God then i'd say their faith wasn't very strong in the first place.

i just don't understand why people are so thretend by someone making a movie which challeges our beliefs. i know what i know. No movie can change what i've witnessed in my life and keep my heart from forever loving God.

Do we really assume our God to be so week?

Last night I was around a bunch of fundie types because I'm helping them out with gathering food for the holidays for poor people. Anyway, the topic of The Golden Compass came up.

They all started about how it's evil and demonic and they'd never allow their kids to see it and how "they heard" all sorts of things. I asked some of them if they had actually read the book, and none of them had. I then told them that I have read every one of the books and that it's merely a fantasy story with a theme that makes people think about the often disturbing things that are done sometimes in the name of religion.

Did they listen to me? No.

They told me to shut up, and if I didn't shut up I could leave.

I left as they continued to attack something they were ignorant about because of what "they heard" from other people who have never read the books.

So yeah.. .why do some people enjoy being ignorant and misinformed?

After all he did have to name everything and with over a million different species of plants, animals, and insects that is alot of naming. Working 9-5, coming up with a new species name every 10 minutes would have taken at least 57 years.

I am a Catholic who believes in Intelligent Design, but there are many Christians who believe in Young Earth Creationism, and I respect that. However, it gets me when they say "i didn't evolve from a monkey", or "If I evolved from a monkey why are they still here".

For all the strict evolutionists out there, what would you think about a bumper sticker that says "I didn't evolve from a monkey, either", since you didn't?

I assume the percentage must be greater than zero for some people to start an uproar, so I'm wondering what percentage of children have become atheists after reading the book (or seeing the movie).

I think all of us would agree that slavery is wrong and evil. But the Bible upholds slavery. (For the New Testament verses, see http://www.religioustolerance.org/sla_bibl2.htm)

And if slavery is objectively wrong, it was never right. Therefore the Bible accepts and condones a sin. Not just any sin, but a sin of the kind that one keeps committing every day. A lifestyle sin.

Evangelicals and Catholics condemn homosexuality using Levitical Law, an off-hand comment in Romans, and Sodom & Gomorrah and through the “lifestyle sin” argument. But if we ignore Paul on slavery and do not condemn those who owned slaves in the past, like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, as having committed a hell-deserving lifestyle sin, on what grounds do we oppose both slavery and homosexuality?

What will it be – is slavery wrong and bad and therefore homosexuality also should be evaluated by reason and experience instead of scripture? Or is slavery right and good?

Let's face it our beliefs are our personal blueprint /recipe/manifesto on how we are going to live our lives. What about us makes us want to make public such highly-sensitive information?

We know that some religions require that their followers confess sins to them and they will handle the sin and give just punishment, we know if you sin against your brother it is proper to confess the sin to your brother and Jesus stated come to me and i will forgive you. Theres only one that is a advocate for our sins and that is Jesus Christ! Why do some religions require that men hear sins when we have Jesus Christ? 1 John 2:1-2
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
2:2
And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Wouldn't all the troubles in the world just dissappear, if people had to barter, or labor for food, shelter? Could we live a quality life, with technology and education, but without money? Is money nescessary, to learn electronics, sewage systems, or politics? Maybe merit/demerit points would be a better method, just curious, and wondering if theists, and atheists aggree or disaggree on the issue of money...

The new "Golden Compass" may have atheistic subject matter, so people say to boycott the movie. How absurd is that? People should be exposed to all kinds of knowledge and be able to come up with their own conclusions on ideas, instead of avoiding them altogether like ostriches with their heads stuck in the sand. As for the "don't take your kid to this movie" argument, you think kids will really pick up on this message? They'll probably think the polar bear and blimp are cool, that's about it.

I am basically a fiscal conservative and social liberal.

As an accountant, I believe that one of our top priorities as a country should be balancing our budget. Debt spiraling out of control accumulating at the great rate it is, is not healthy. I believe that being in a global market place, that a country's wealth will be as important as a country's military. I believe we may need to cut social programs and pork spending to accomplish a balanced budget...I do not believe we should raise taxes, given the current state of the economy.

I believe we need a strong defense system, and I believe we should invest military dollars in more "star wars" programs.

I believe we should reel in illegal immigration, not close our doors, but allow those that can put more into our society, than what they drain out of our society, to come in legally.

I'm not opposed to a flat tax, as long as there are no loopholes for anyone.

The right to bear arms should be a given, but I am not oppose

A few questions about angels. Do they have genders or are they more like Ken dolls (as portrayed in the movie "Dogma")? If this is true, why in the movie "Michael", does that Angel urinate?

Also, do Angels really become human if their wings are cut off? If this part is true and they are genderless, do they then get the right "parts" since they've become human?

These questions are not meant to offend anyone or mock any religion. Please don't take offense, anybody.

Thank you.
