This is a segment from a longer article I wrote on this subject. I am a Christian myself, and I tend to think that people should not judge before they know the full story. Here is the segment from my article.
"Some people have also said that the girl, Lyra, kills her mother to be free from her authority. Her mother dies in the third book to (I haven't read it in a few years so this is as I remember it) SAVE her daughter.

In the third book they do in fact kill "god" but it is not the God as we know it. It is an angel who has taken up the name and has no authority at all, really.

The story is in fact very intriguing, and I am getting very tired of Christians talking about it as if they know anything about the book besides what fanatics have written, and the few quotes they have heard or seen Philip Pullman say.

Before you critisize it, read it. Then say what you have to say.

And if Christians can't take a little competition without going over the deep end, then something is sorely wrong with us. This kind of competition is oftentimes what helps to strengthen our faith.

I am probably going to see the movie, hopefully the day it comes out. I grew up reading this triligy, and loved it. Do I have any less faith in Christ? No! Do I still believe Jesus died to save me? Yes. Do I have any doubts about God, or the fact that He exists as the Bible says? Absolutely not.

I am not scarred in any way from reading, and enjoying these books. They bring forth some interesting topics to talk about and debate with close family and friends, and they give you a view of what some people do in fact believe.

I enjoy Philip Pullman's work, and will continue to read the books over and over again.

I'm not saying that everything presented in the series is completely accurate. I'm not even saying that all of it is right. I'm just saying, read the books and get a first hand understanding of what's going .. you condemn them.

That is all I have to say."
Hope this helps,.
God Bless,
Kat

Actually from what I heard the movie isn't all that great anyhow. It will be big in the beginning because of the hype, but it will die off quickly. What I hate is the whole Christian community getting up and talking about how bad and Anti-Christian the movie is, which in a way premotes the movie even more. If people would just shut up about it maybe people wouldn't have wanted to see it in the first place.

the only reason christians would boycott a FICTIONAL MOVIE would be because they are bigots and narrowminded. when the chronicles of narnia came out, you didnt see "Do you hope as I do that ALL aethiests will boycott the chronicles of narnia"? come on people get a grip. if you are so unstable in your own spirituality that you think that a MOVIE will shake its foundations, then maybe you should re-evaluate what really matters and come to understand what you really believe before you judge a movie.

Well...err...ah...mmm...no.

You know the domino theory.

Boycott one movie and the next thing is the movie theater is in foreclosure and the city loses part of its tax-base.

I hate it when someone gives me a good straight line but then finishes the joke before I get to.

im Christian and i wont be seeing it as i know the agenda of the author or whatever he is.

But im sure many so called Christians will watch it anyway like harry potter it may even appear in churches that try and reach the lost by using the things of the world.

But hey, after homer insulted Jesus 10 minutes into the movie i stopped watching it right there.

so im just a fundie...

yea, and while were at it, let's all put blinders on when venturing outdoors...

I tend to believe it is possible to understand the world and still be able to discern truth from fiction...

let's leave the boycotting left to porn, sex shops, that sort of thing...

save your money and don't bother giving anymore attention to the satans movie!!
if everyone would not go then he the evil will lose money and stop all future productions!
he is a waste of our time and energy to even be talking about.
he is taking up the air we need to survive. if the guy wants to hate God let em. i don't want any part of his wicked way. he will soon find out that we have a God and God won't be happy :)
