I believe in confessing (a) to God and (b) to the person I've offended. If it does not concern another person, just (a).

It’s getting so boring to read some of these answers. Over and over, we are subjected to the uninformed views of ninnies! The ignorance is mind-boggling.
The Bible fundamentalists had better be confessing their sins to each other, since the Bible tells all of us to in James 5 verse 16 to do so. Anything less would be "not following the word of God." Something they take great delight in accusing Catholics of.
To answer a few answers:
Catholics know that forgiveness comes from God. It comes through his authoritative representatives here on earth, and directly. Jesus told his apostles, "what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and what you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." This is part of the responsibility of a priest. Why would Jesus give this authority to only 12 men and have it die with them? That doesn't make sense
Why would Jesus give this authority if it wasn't necessary? Everything Jesus did and said was necessary.
The priest does not "mediate" for us. Jesus is the only mediator. The priest is the sacramental representative of Christ here on earth. He is not the mediator and we don't think he is.
Most of us would agree that you need a pastor/priest to perform the sacrament of marriage, or the sacrament of baptism...how is it they have the authority to do that? God gave them that authority...God can do that. He can also give the authority to forgive sins...again...God can do that.
Most of what I read here is just a regurgitation of the same old tired misunderstandings of Catholicism. It would be nice of those of you who do not agree, at least took the time to find out how the sacrament of confession is used and applied. What the Church teaches about it and how we, as Catholics, take advantage of this wonderful channel of grace.

Hiding sins from one another is one thing; hiding them from God is impossible.
However, as Christians, we are instructed to tell other believers about our sins/weaknesses so we may be strengthened and edified by their help. This makes us accountable for our actions. Plus, confession is a huge weight off the shoulders.
Confession to priests makes no sense as priests do not possess the capacity to forgive them. Only the offended One can forgive the offense.

What actually is the purpose of confession anyway..?
The bible states that forgiveness for sins is subject to confessing to the offended party that you have wronged them and compensating them for any loses they have suffered from as a result of your action (sin)
Until this is done there can be no forgiveness from god..
So your sect confess to a minister who hasn`t been offended and expect god to forgive you ..Wake up.. or you are doomed..by your very own book..!!

I don't necessarily believe in hiding my sins from other people. But I also don't believe that I have to announce them to someone in my church to receive forgiveness for them, either.
I think that if someone acts in a way that affects other people, they should confess and apologize to those people. But I don't believe that you must confess everything to another person.

Protestants give open testimony of their sins. And I guess you are saying Catholics don't hide their sins they just slip back in the little box and confess to a priest who is sworn never to reveal their secret and they are forgiven. Of child molestation or anything else secretly.

I was raised Catholic (non practicing now) and the thought of confession always bothered me. If you wanted to confess your sins to God, why did you have to do it through a priest on a set day/time?

If you do not believe in confession, you don't believe in repentance. If you don't believe in repentance, you don't believe in sin. If you don't believe in sin, you don't believe in God.
Even the most transparent of Christians, keep somethings from some people. But, we must be willing to be open at the drop of a hat.

No Christians (whether catholic or protestant or whatever) need to help eachother when they are struggling with something. like iron shapens iron or when Jesus said to confess your sins to one another. That doesn't mean tell everyone but most christian would tell someone if they love God enough to take action and change their ways.
...There is only one Bible why seperate the church?

turning out to be compassionate in the direction of oneself is from time to time an entire life's activity. i'm satisfied that confession and your thought in a extra physically powerful potential became powerful to you - yet as a psychotherapist I easily have had customers who're Catholics (and different branches of Christianity) who're tortured by the experience of guilt which they can't 'confess' with the aid of fact they sense so undesirable that they did confess/pray/carry out an request for forgiveness and additionally they 'could' sense ok, yet they do no longer. and from time to time the component they sense undesirable approximately is many years in the past. So, besides the shown fact which you have got here upon a particular thank you to connect with your compassion for your self (which inevitably includes acknowledging the fault and promising oneself to no longer do it returned), it fairly is in basic terms good fortune for you that the Catholic version works so nicely for you. every physique has their own path, and from time to time atheists can do it in basic terms as effectively (eg by talking to a relied on chum - I do think of asserting it out loud is amazingly significant - and making amends in an perfect way) in basic terms as some Catholics warfare with it.
