Last night I was around a bunch of fundie types because I'm helping them out with gathering food for the holidays for poor people. Anyway, the topic of The Golden Compass came up.

They all started about how it's evil and demonic and they'd never allow their kids to see it and how "they heard" all sorts of things. I asked some of them if they had actually read the book, and none of them had. I then told them that I have read every one of the books and that it's merely a fantasy story with a theme that makes people think about the often disturbing things that are done sometimes in the name of religion.

Did they listen to me? No.

They told me to shut up, and if I didn't shut up I could leave.

I left as they continued to attack something they were ignorant about because of what "they heard" from other people who have never read the books.

So yeah.. .why do some people enjoy being ignorant and misinformed?

Not ALL Believers are like this.

Ignorance is bliss. I often wish I was ignorant as well, life would be much easier. I research things I am interested in and when people talk their fabricated reality I tell them the reality and the time I spent learning of the subject but they definitely choose to believe what they want. Fact and fiction are irrelevant, if you print something that they want to believe in a easily accessed area it will become fact. If you lead they will follow. Most people are sheep, you can't fix em all. Just live with it cause you'll just make yourself crazy wondering what is wrong with people.

People are often ignorant about things they don't know or are afraid of. Its a shame that the group of people speaking of the story hadn't even read the book and judged it just by the reviews and the previews.

Sounds like to me the group of friends you were with are really shallow and close minded people. I would find a new group to hang with.

They feel threatened by new information that disturbs what they want to think is true. This is also the case with people who hate religion and therefore won't listen to anything good about religion, or who hate people of another race and don't want to hear...well, you get the idea.

I do hope you are not saying that religious fundamentalists are the only group that suffer from that failing?

Reality is tough on immature people. There are many means of escape from it, and some groups are intolerant of other groups' habitual means of escape. "What has Reality done for me lately?", is what a fundie, e.g. my oldest sister, should say, since that is their collective attitude. They are brainwashed form birth with some nonsense and fear to even question it. I am made of sterner stuff, for I questioned the family religion at age 7, even though Mom's father was a pastor.

It is bad enough that they are misinformed.

But hey, we have all been there at some point.

But to take your information - the one person there who has actually read the books - and to actually refuse to even consider the validity of it . . .

How stupid can you get? They are actively acting to remain ignorant and misinformed.

I have no understanding of such people.

I probably would have stayed and kept talking. But I'm a glutton for punishment like that!

Aww, that sounded really mean and rude. I'm sorry you were treated so awful.

I think it's just really easy to be that way, instead of just trying to truly understand the world around them, they've chosen to disregard it. It's judgment like this that makes them miss out on some cool stuff.

Enjoy the movie!

the whole golden compass thing is funny to me. Who cares...like it is the first movie to challenge or "attack" religious beliefs? It probably wasn't meant to be but its an excellent publicity stunt.

Oh! Those people are so pathetic that they didn't even try to listen to others side. They just want to stay in one side so there's nothing we can do about them. Yes it's true, most but not all people in this world are open minded enough. I wished they were smart as you do!
