The new "Golden Compass" may have atheistic subject matter, so people say to boycott the movie. How absurd is that? People should be exposed to all kinds of knowledge and be able to come up with their own conclusions on ideas, instead of avoiding them altogether like ostriches with their heads stuck in the sand. As for the "don't take your kid to this movie" argument, you think kids will really pick up on this message? They'll probably think the polar bear and blimp are cool, that's about it.

Oregon Flower, telling people not to watch a movie cause it has ateistic themes is not being prejudice??? That's the definition of prejudice!!! It's like saying don't watch Mean Girls because it's about girls. If these people would say don't watch it cause it's slow or boring or has a weak plot, these would be valid unprejudice reasons. DUH

I especially find Nicole Kidman's statement hypocritical. She said to the press that she, as a Catholic, didn't find atheistic elements in the script at all.

It implies that if she did, she wouldn't have done the movie in the first place.

I honestly don't understand that fear of new ideas. I never was a person who'll bash someone's beliefs, but geeez - some healthy critics is always welcome! Or at least it should be.

People throughout human history have been against things that they dont know, understand, and are not apart of. More people have died in the name of religion than for any other reason ever. The problem lies in that most people do not have the ability to think. What I mean by this, is having the ability to see something from a completely different view. Just because you dont agree with something doesnt mean its wrong. Christianity and lack of education are the number one problems with the United States...and some, not all, parts of the world. If humans would some day learn to accept views that are not there own and show respect, love, and understanding towards everyone, there would be no more fighting...the problem is everyone thinks that they are right...when in truth NOONE IS RIGHT> the only thing that I really know for cretain is that I know nothing.

You will find that those that are prejudiced against atheism are against every belief system other than their own.. Sadly they are judgemental, which is a commandment of most religions, do not judge..

As for the Golden Compass. The great thing about boycotting anything, is that it always does the opposite.
Until people on Answers mentioned that we should boycott this movie, I had never heard of it. Now I cannot wait to see it. Boycotting is a judgement again. Isn't it interesting how many believe they are living the word of "God", yet choose to break many teaching of Jesus. Words are twisted to suit what they want to believe.

I feel it is absolutely ridiculous to state that this was written by somebody who doesn't believe in a "God". So what! Imagination doesn't belong to a particular species. Can you imagine a child sitting watching this movie and thinking to themselves "I shouldn't be watching this because it is against my religion". How absurd is this boycott. Watch, it is going to break all records, and then movies will be made from the other books he has written, and it will go right through the roof like "Harry Potter". At least that is what I would love to see happen.

To all those that judged this in Answers. Thank you! You did many of us a great favour by pointing out a movie that we cannot wait to see.

Peace and love

Not an atheist, not a member of an organized religion, but a Spiritual person who does not judge, and I love my neighbour (everyone in this world) as myself.

That's what I would like know. What ever happened to learning and educating oneself regarding ALL religions (not just those with many followers too)?

Whatever happened to letting people believe whatever they believe. It doesn't matter how long someone talks until their blue in the face; in general people are going to believe in whatever they want.

The truth is that noone really knows if there is a God or many Gods or none at all; we all get to find out when we're deceased. Perhaps we'll all be surprised by a wild card that we never thought.

I would wager that the producers of this movie will be laughing all the way to bank because history has proven that when people start gather in a crowd (literally and figuratively) others want to know what all the controversy is about. It makes for good sales. So for those people who do not want others to see the movie the best thing they could do for their cause is to shut up. I for one only see about 3 movies at the theater per year and previously I wouldn't have even given this movie a second thought but now I am going to see it. And whatever the content of the movie and book are my own beliefs won't change but I will most likely be entertained.

This is such a deep question.

People believe a relationship with God produces good and a life without him produces evil. It's ignorant but you gotta give them some credit for trying to mointor what their childern see. I would rather see that than see another child half naked thinking shes as sexy as the grown women in music videos.

Not to say over protection does that, but I do believe you should only expose your childern to things you understand and are comfortable explaining and answering questions about.

Cults fear non-believers worse than anything else in the world. They know that if they are exposed to rational thoughts long enough, they won't be able to continue to believe in something that, deep in their subconscious, they know is imaginary.

I have some experience in theatre, myself. And one thing I will never forget about theatre, is that to truly put on a good performance, you have to immerse yourself in the role. And there is always a period where the actors have to get comfortable with each other before they truly allow themselves to do this.

Everyone's afraid that another person is going to make fun of them if they get too deep into their part. But once the whole cast agrees to support one another, then the really good performance starts.

It's the same way with believers. But atheists are the members of the cast that will never participate in the charade. We make them uncomfortable and angry for that reason.

"Christianity" as a term lumps all Christians into one team. There are Christians who do no longer enable the affection of God which they're profess to ought to make any transformations of their character or habit. They carry their prejudices and conduct expensive and in uncomplicated terms have the likeness of Christians. They bypass to church, they take part in church applications yet inwardly they do no longer seem to be genuine Christians prepared to alter their hearts and minds. THEN there are Christians who've allowed God to alter their hearts. They see ALL mankind as brothers and sisters in choose. that's they who boost the hand of help, and friendship to all the international. and then there are atheists who come to Yahoo solutions pretending to be Christians and submit hateful comments because of the fact they hate Christians and choose to portray them as prejudiced, hate mongering kinds who don't have something extra powerful to do then deliver all and sundry to hell. Christians do no longer discriminate or persecute. Psuedo-Christians do. Christians are the missionaries who try to hold healthful residing to people in remoted areas of the international. Christians are people who prepared placed themselves in possibility to assist others earnings a extra powerful way of existence. Christians build hospitals and prepare the message of healthful residing so people can lead effective lives. Christians care approximately their fellow guy inspite of colour, race, or non secular ideals.

people are against atheism, because atheists for the most part have been too silent in letting christians and other faiths turn atheism into a bad word. if you tell a christian his beliefs are stupid, he'll get angry. he'll yell at you about how jesus apparently died for your sins and how this is how you repay him. but when christians talk about atheists, we are for the most part passive. we allow it too much. we need to be more vocal. not to the point of being emotional, but we do need to make ourselves known, and let it be known what we think of religion everytime someone says something so disresectful about us. that's just my opinion. i could be wrong.

edit: i was thinking about how i can't remember any movie where an atheist has been a good guy. can you? along comes this movie, and voila! BOYCOTT!!!

edit: i'm really not against the boycott of the movie. i for one think it's hilarious. free publicity for the movie. more people will watch it now because of the boycott, than if there wasn't one to begin with. i for one will not be boycotting any church. in stead i will just use my own judgment to realize how stupid all of them are and not go. if anyone feels the need to go and worship an imaginary friend, by all means, go right ahead. i applaud your superstitious nature. see? no need for a boycott.

I don't understand all of the craziness over a film.
If you want to see, go see it.
If you don't like it, see something else or stay home and pray for the people who are watching the movie. As for me and my family we will not go and see it but that is our choice. That is what this country was founded on, freedom of choice.

What's interesting is that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops gives "The Golden Compass" a positive review on its website..
